Preface: LtCol S.x MacTemplar -Nomad Gigolo Warrior King

Where to begin? It seems that war is just too big of a topic for Hollywood to handle in 90-110 minutes. Go figure. I know I can’t do it justice in 300-plus pages, either, but it will be more accurate than anything Hollywood can dish up.

I suspect what people want from Hollywood is to take the viewer from innocent civilian to battle-hardened soldier and back again. Do we really want Hollywood to tell us about Charlie’s war in Afghanistan or are we more interested in the conflicts within the soul of the Lion of Panjshir?

Modern war movies seem to be more about telling the story within the story. The other problem with movies is that there is no smell, except of popcorn and spilled fountain drinks. Try to imagine the real smells of war. Then smell the “imagined” ones of fear and death. Do death and fear have a scent? Is it a bad thing if you don’t know the answer to that question?

We are all fascinated with war. It is tribalism at its worst and unveils the darkness within each of our souls. That is why scenes from The Deer Hunter are so hard to watch. We realize that war can take good, decent, and normal people to dark places from which they never can fully return. The movies that touch us the most are those that teach us new ways to think about the common man turned warrior. What makes him take on these unbearable loads? Imagine the burden of command, the weight of a nation upon your very flawed and weak mind and body.

What if, after great personal sacrifice and loss, your president gives away with the stroke of his pen the victory soaked in the blood of your friends and the Marines who believed in you enough to follow your not-always-perfect orders?

Why is war hell? you ask. War is hell because of how the Ruling Class mocks the sacrifices of our warriors. Then there is survivor’s guilt thrown in for good measure.

The best modern war movies do not try to explain war or even human nature. What they do is try to provide a glimpse into the impenetrable psychic conflicts that modern warfare weighs upon the American grunt. One reason that Saving Private Ryan did not really work after the opening scenes is because Tom Hanks was miscast in his role as an infantry officer. He could not and did not give us any sense, other than a shaking hand, of what it is like to order good men to their deaths. The only relief from the burden of command in combat is one’s own death, but in dying what if your replacement is an even more flawed human specimen?

In other words, you have asked me, the Soldier, to go to places and do things for you there that you cannot do for yourself. I have been there and done things as ordered. I am forever changed and not always for the better.

Before spending nearly 30 years in the defense of the greatest nation on Earth’s history, I enjoyed the life of a carefree vagabond with nine lives to give. Now I battle 24/7/11 with tyrants. Tyranny is a beast that cannot be killed but only brought to heel.

Your dilemma is whether or not to accept me as I now am or pretend that you have nothing to do with what I have become. I did not start out this way. I know freedom is not free and that our nation is worth the sacrifice but at what human cost? There is no butcher’s bill too great, physically and/or psychologically, we are unwilling to allow our warriors to pay.

Finally, how do you make sure that America will remain worthy of my efforts to defend her? Will I be mocked in the end by my fellow citizens turning the greatest nation on Earth into something that was not worth fighting, killing, and dying for?

  1. Updated to include the comment Miss Hypatia recommended: Before spending nearly 30 years in the defense of the greatest nation on Earth’s history, I enjoyed the life of a carefree vagabond with nine lives to give. Now I battle 24/7/11 with tyrants. Tyranny is a beast that cannot be killed but only brought to heel.

One can’t, but I am convinced we’d be far worse off without y’all.

Let’s try defunding the military as many cities are attempting to do with their PDs and I’ll move to Europe.

My Dad was a WWII combat veteran. He died last year at the age of 95. As far as we knew, he never grappled with PSTD or anything like that. As far as we knew. But on his deathbed, when he was delirious, he was for a time obviously having flashbacks to combat situations from the war that had ended over 70 years earlier. We knew this because he was speaking, and giving instructions and advice to his fellow soldiers.

I wish more people had more of an understanding of what our freedom costs. It’s impossible for anyone who hasn’t been in combat to ever totally understand it, but the total ignorance of so many is really troubling.

Thankfully, the flashbacks seemed to be a phase he went through when he was dying. In the hours right before he died, he was smiling and his arms were reaching out to heaven, and he was blowing kisses towards heaven. It seemed pretty clear to everyone who was there that he was communicating with people in heaven. He was totally at peace when he died.

    1. Thank you, Liz. I know that God exists, I know that Heaven is real, and I know that my Dad and everyone else I love who has passed on is there. That’s all I need to know.

If leftists gain power and defund the U.S. military, there won’t be a Europe to move to. The free world depends on America for its defense.

    1. Even if America falls, I would still take my chances in America over any other place. For lots of reasons: one thing America has going for us is guns. There are just too many guns out there, and too many people who own them, and too many people who know how to make them for the government to ever take all of them away. I wish more people in America loved freedom, but as bad as things are here, it is still better here than it is anywhere else. Even if everything goes to hell, I have more faith in the ability of Americans to rebel and rebuild than I have in anyone else.

I haven’t traveled very much, but the fact that most people in most other places were willing to give up their guns tells me all that I need to know. The people I know and love in Scotland are wonderful people, but they don’t have the first clue how to maintain their freedom, never mind gain it back when it has been lost. There was a time when they did understand freedom, but that time has passed.

        1. They don’t have the ass to take back their freedom if lost. Freedom is easier to maintain than to win. Don’t believe me? Ask the Venz and/ or Founding Brothers.

        2. The ‘Ettes, to begin with; since we’ve had the benefit of your stories, your thoughts on strategy, and your zest for all things individual, unique and irreplaceable – not to mention irrepressible.

        3. Don’t we – as in the ‘Ettes, among others – know that it – as in freedom- comes at a cost that few are currently willing to pay.

        4. No D’Nanda, I am in violent disagreement. I said about 3 1/2 years ago that the Progz were attempting a bloodless coup. We sat on our collective hands while the Dems used our money to investigate and litigate the Trump Administration to death.

I said maybe 8 years before that on L! that the Ruling Class would not go down without a fight. Having had it so good for so long on the backs of the middle class, why wouldn’t they fight tooth, fang and claw to preserve their corrupt and perverted lifestyles?

No Nanda, y’all still don’t get it. I am pounding my head into the wall for you to no avail.

        5. Who’s ‘y’all”, sir? And, what, for the love, of Chesty, don’t we “get”? Why’re you so ticked at us, in particular? Those of us who’ve hung in through thick and thin have done so because we – each and all – are trying in our own way to ‘force-multiply’ what you’re doing.

        6. Paraphrasing one of my dear Marine Drill Instructors (DI), try in one hand and shit in the other then tell me which one fills up faster.

Dig your heals in D’Nanda, it is so cute and girly.

I thought that would show up under your earlier reference to the fact that freedom is never free, nor should it be – otherwise, what’s it worth or why should we strive (as individuals, or as a nation) to maintain it? If salvation cost Someone everything, shouldn’t freedom at least cost us love, support, staying informed, fulfilling civic duty, (whether civilian and/or military), and holding those we’ve elected to account for performance?

Late-nights, once I’m settled, lend themselves to opining easily on subjects like music, food, etc., rather than your wonderful book excerpts, I suppose….I’ll leave “more to come” notes, and revisit, in future on these. Leave the porch light on – and the welcome mat out – please and thank you?

    1. This observation you have made, Simon, is an important one: Trump has more support with black voters than other republican in recent history has had, and most of that support is from young black people. I was reading an article about this, and according to the article, young blacks are more likely to be in business for themselves, and less likely to work for the government than their elders. Which may have something to do with why they like Trump.

There are positive developments happening, and there are some great young people out there, but you will never see or hear about them on tv.

This may be true, but I still have more faith in young Americans than I have in young people anywhere else.

      1. Last night, President Trump told the Proud Boys to “stand back and stand by”. They have adopted that, and are making up tshirts with that slogan.

Leftists want to blame all of the violence that has been happening on “militias” and “white supremacists”, but really, they are just giving the Proud Boys free press.

        1. Yup 🙂

Antifa and Blm won’t go anywhere unless they have the guarantee of government protection. I live in Springfield, MA. We have a democratic mayor, but fortunately for us he hasn’t gone totally off the deep end. When Antifa and Blm came to Springfield, he welcomed them and even joined them as they marched: he also called in the National Guard to look on. They had one peaceful protest in Springfield with the National Guard looking on, and they haven’t been back since. Because they know that they won’t be protected here.

These antifa and blm types have gone a long time with little or no resistance. They are way overconfident, and if/when they meet up with real resistance, they are in for a rude awakening.

  6. “Yes ma’am. Actually the Proud Boys give me hope. No wonder the Progz hate them.”

They just did a segment on Fox about the Proud Boys. Their current chairman is a guy named Enrique Tarrio. He is of hispanic decent, and speaks fluent Spanish. He just appeared on Univision doing an interview in Spanish.

So much for white supremacy. LOL 🙂

D’Nanda, may I ask who are the others you speak for? Other than d’Ettes that is.
