SOTD 022420

Hi ST, ‘Ettes, ‘Sieurs, and All!

It’s a “Mrs. Robinson” Monday, with Simon & Garfunkel. (Listen closely and you may hear a shoutout from the Chaps, too.) Enjoy!

  1. Nice selection Nanda from Bookends. That and Bridge were two fine albums!

I realized Simon was the true artist in terms of composing, but I never felt the same after he and Garfunkel broke up. AG had such an unusual and lovely voice; I always loved them more as a duo than individuals.

Sadly, same goes for the Beatles. Lennon/Ono were seemingly talentless, “Wings” was an embarrassment and Harrison’s All Things Must Pass” was decent but as we all came to realize, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

  2. Agree re: AG, Liz; but not re: “Wings” (Macca made no secret of his penchant for “Silly Love Songs”) – and “Let It Be” was his, alone); nor do I think that Hari got the props he deserved for things like “Something” and “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”, “Here Comes the Sun” – oh, and “Piggies” was one of Mom P’s all-time favorites – (again, all Harrison’s own). I think Lennon had it right when he said: “We were just a *band*, that’s all….The world’s first ‘boy band’, that we all outgrew.”

  3. Macca had some “touch-ups” from Lennon on “Let It Be” so I still consider this to be a Beatles collaboration.
“Here Comes The Sun” and the excellent “Something ” were all written by George as a Beatle. He certainly didn’t publish this song under the Apple label without input from L&M, but think he was highly underrated as a a songwriter. After all, his best friend (despite all the personal helter skelter) was Eric Clapton.

  4. Fair enough, Liz….The Fabs were Fab – and they still cheer me up no end….But I am glad that they all moved on, found wives/lives, and still made music. Mick and the gang are (now) sort of sad….(I’ll give you a treat tomorrow, when my current assignment w/SOTD ends, though.) Hoping you’re having a marvelous Monday!
