  3. So interesting Simon. The definition I remember from my anthro courses is that a religion grows by breeding (You learn the creed from your parents) and a cult, by recruitment. But Then, in its early days , Christianity woulda qualified a a cult—and it was only one of many which arose among the Jews during that period. There are 3 Abrahamic religions. Judaism does not proselytize, it discourages conversion, and even back in the warlike days of the Hebrews, it never went to war to convert other nations to worship of Yahweh. Christianity too, IF you look only at Jesus’ words, was intended to be spread by non-violent persuasion, and He had absolutely nothing to say about temporal power.
    Islam comes along, a syncretistic mish -mash of Judaism and Christianity, and it was from the beginning ALSO a system of government and it was to be spread by it he sword per explicit instruction of the Koran. That makes it completely different from its antecedents. Their bastard offspring, if you will.
    “Satanic”? Well, probably not to Jews, who are still awaiting the Messiah and who have encountered lotsa false prophets in the interim. To Christians, necessarilynyes because they don’t accept Christ as God. Nay doctrine such as te divinity of Christ and the a trinity threatens Allah’s oneness.
    It goes back to my post yesterday: all 3 religions came outta the Rast but Judaism and Christianity heve been Westernized; Islam never was. West good! East bad.

  5. Agree with you; still say it’s Christianity’s mess to clean up – as we’ve done before – and still grieve for those who would in no way recognize it as their own; also, praying for those seeking a ‘reform of the reform’ that currently exists.

    Unfortunately, the numbers are not on our side. Although we are still the biggest religion in the world at 2.3 billion, we’re dealing with 1.9 billion Muslims who are not nearly as tolerant as Protestants, Catholics, and Eastern/Oriental orthodoxy.

    I still am horrified by the conflict between the Shia and the Sunnis. Isn’t it enough that both believe in Allah and the Prophet but nonetheless kill one another over the question of who is the rightful heir to a title? If I recall, Lutherans, Methodists, Presbyterians and Catholics all agree on one man as the Son of God but simply choose to worship Him in different ways.

    I believe Islam is an irreparable, intolerant mess. I wish it would just go away and leave the rest of us in peace.
