      1. Unfortunately, I tend more to try to forget about Him-to push him out of my mind, when I am angry with Him. Howling at Him is a better way to deal with it.

        Many years ago, when I realized that I was avoiding prayer because I was angry with God, I started praying. I asked God to help me be more at peace and happy in my relationship with Him. Clear as day, out of the blue, a message came into my mind, and I swear it was God speaking to me. He said, “I don’t care how you feel about Me, I just want you to obey Me.” I was very happy to hear this, and started laughing.

        I don’t worry about how I feel about God anymore. I just focus on trying to obey Him. I wish more people realized that God can totally handle it if we aren’t happy with Him.

      6. A dear priest-friend of mine was (finally) diagnosed with a progressive neuromuscular disorder shortly after being ordained ~20 years ago. He and God had plenty of opportunities for ‘Job-like’ encounters on car trips to the not-so-local clinic in the early days. He once said: “Always tell God the truth. He can take it. Keep the lines of communication open; cuss if you need to…..”. Wisdom!

      7. No sir. I usually look at what I could have done to prevent the disaster (if anything) and quickly move on to protect and defend myself.

  2. Amen, TW! Hyp, He does, indeed, chastise those whom He loves; but, has given the gifts of His Son and the Spirit, to help us come through trials, and discern His will and providence, yes? He has not left us orphaned. (Happy 6th day of Christmastide!)

        It varies, ST; anywhere between the 2nd of January through the 8th, most commonly. That’s how we get the 12 days in the carol. But the liturgical season lasts until we recall the presentation of the infant Jesus in the temple.

        Of course, ST; the reformers saw abuses that they wanted to avoid for themselves. Some of them went a bit too far, too fast; so family members stopped speaking to each other….It happens. Now, it seems, the rift is narrowing again, for some.

    1. Sure you can ask and are correct to do so!

      It was because I’ve always admired the courage of Abe and his willingness to exploit the gray areas of the constitution to keep us together, and more importantly, I trust God, implicitly and completely.

      5. You have to give him credit for keeping the union together even though ironically many of us now want to secede ! But a united nation was necessary for our survival then. I especially am thinking of our military that is heavily infiltrated with Rebels. 🙂

    3. Of course they are but many Protestants have a very “American” suspicion of the Vatican aka a “higher authority” that is not elected.

      There is no offense meant in this remark; I am only reporting what I’ve heard from family and friends my entire life. The good news is that we share many cultural values with both Catholics and Jews and we’ve all lived together peacefully.

      Islam? Another story indeed.
