Pretty Insulting

I feel kinda dumb—I didn’t realize it was indeed an insult for us ‘ettes to be called “pretty girls”. Contrary to what I’da thought, evidently it means a female with low self esteem. Low. So I reckon it was meant to say, we’re just pathetic if we want to blog on a site where we get some attention, sometimes positive attention. (Did the rest of you know what she meant?)

Like, that’s the best we can do, we’ve got nothing else going for us. (I hope the editors of our state bar association magazine and the lawyers who write me about my articles never find that out about me 😱.)

Should I even post this? I’m the one always telling us all here to just…make our own fun, who gives a phuque about les autRes. (And as I’ve said, I’m promiscuous: I love ‘em both, even the one that jilted me….maybe I do have low self-esteem.)

But the (high-heeled) shoe is on the other foot now; this was a fem on fem attack. I feel betrayed. I can’t say it better than Trump would: Sad.

But, in the interest of giving our host yet another glimpse in to the mysterious world of women, I’ll point out how this phenom mirrors the great big universe: Men, as ST has told us, tell “war stories”. It’s how they entertain each other, stories of conquest in business, combat, bed. So do (male) lawyers; they brag about a brilliant cross-examination, about how they extricated themselves from a trap laid for them during litigation. This is normal. It makes the guy a popular, generally acclaimed speaker! But when a female attorney does exactly the same thing, it’s boring, and “she’s just blowing her own horn”.

  1. For some reason, this didn’t publish my entire draft. I am still struggling with WordPress, but I think its just technological ineptitude. I did mean to conclude that I intend to follow my own very sage advice, and forgive, as I hope for forgiveness.

  2. After you hit 40, being called a “pretty girl” is a delightful thing so ST feel free to continue …

As to the rest of your post, Hyp I can certainly relate. While in the corporate world (in NYC of all places!) I was nicknamed “The Dunnster” – half woman, half monster. Most of the time, it was used in jest (particularly by my boss with whom I worked well), so I remained good humored about it. It was interesting though that the aggressive behavior expected of male employees was not remarked upon.

So… So what? I carried on, ran a profitable business and was the most highly paid person in my division. They could have called me whatever they wanted because I was respected (even a little feared) and more than fairly compensated for my work. What else counts at the office?

  3. ….Continued – because I still can’t edit comments (WordPress weirdness.)

Anyway, if someone says I’m pretty (Inside and/or out) it boosts my self-confidence. I’m not male – despite my short hair – and don’t aspire to be….Appreciate the kind words, ST, to me, and all the ‘Ettes!

  4. That was my point; I took the white husky’s comment as a Backhanded compliment but now I know (a) it was an insult and (b);what kind it was. I know ST doesn’t mean that when he calls us that. And yes ET I agree: nice to hear it again!
I shouldnta posted this. I think part of my USSR draft may have resurfaced—if I can conjure it up again, I’ll put it up, and you just forget this’d.

  5. Very insulting but my dear very country, very saintly mother beat into my brothers and me, “Listen to me good now boys. Don’tcha be sayen’ nothen’ ’bout someone if’n ya’ll ain’t got nothen’ good to say. Do you boys hear me!?!”

[Safe bet to say that in unison we replied, “Yesm ma’am.”]

So that is all I think that I should say (for now) about those poor sods over on legacy site #2.

    1. On the other hand, I always enjoyed the infamous Alice Roosevelt Longworth’s remark “If you can’t say something nice about anybody, sit here next to me. ” 🙂

      1. Off-topic but who cares?:

“I like to have a martini,
        Two at the very most.
After three I’m under the table,
after four I’m under my host.”

      1. I think this was one of her funniest quips:
“You can lead a horticulture, but you can’t make her think.”

As ET might say, she was a first class wit and always irreverent. What’s not to like?

  6. Oh yea and one final thought: Don’t even (pretty) girls like to look at beautiful women? If it were men only who watched the Miss America pageants and such, there would be no evening dress contest and the talent event would probably look a lot different than it does today, for example and/or e.g., no chemistry experiments.

The male of the species is more glorious in nature only. God made us different from the animal kingdom for a reason goshdurn it to Hades!

When did being pretty become a sin?

    1. Yes, how come women’s magazines have pictures of gorgeous women on the covers? But t’wasn’t ever thus: in Regency England, men wore britches of a thin, clingy material called nankeen, and everybody, male and female, gossiped about the beauty of the gentlemen’s legs!

      1. Maybe so but whenever and wherever I visit museums, the great artists since the beginning of time seem to spend a lot more time and energy in recreating the female form than the other one(s). God bless them!

      2. When I was a 20-something my mom told me that any woman would die to have my legs. Until this comment of yours Hypatia, I think I completely misunderstood what she was talking about.

  7. ST Unleashed! sentence of the month: But the (high-heeled) shoe is on the other foot now; this was a fem on fem attack.

  8. Howdy! I know this is kinda off topic but I was wondering which blog platform are you using for this website? I’m getting tired of WordPress because I’ve had problems with hackers and I’m looking at alternatives for another platform. I would be great if you could point me in the direction of a good platform.
