Earliest Memories

My earliest memory is from when I was around 2; it was a warm, sunny day, and I was with both of my parents in their bedroom while they were getting dressed up to go somewhere. My Dad was in the room, I think adjusting his tie in the mirror-not sure, because he wasn’t the focal point of my attention, but he was definitely there. My Mom was dressed up in a pink Jackie Kennedy type suit, and her blonde hair was done to perfection; she was smiling and laughing and swinging me back and forth. We were by the window, and the sun was shining in on us, and I remember looking up at her as she swung me and being totally mesmerized by this gorgeous woman who was my Mommy.

I have other very early memories, but I am pretty sure that the one I just described is the earliest; my Mother was very slender, and not visibly pregnant, so that would have made me just a little over 2; my brother was born when I was almost 3.

What are your earliest memories?

  1. To avoid telling you about a memory I’ve already shared, I have spent a considerable amount of time thinking of your post.
And ive decided my memory of glass shampoo bottles must be very very early indeed.
I can picture that Johnson’s Baby Shampoo bottle with its pink lid. Here’s the thing: I wouldn’t trust myself even today to wash my hair froma glass shampoo bottle! Glass is, y’know, glassy. It is going to slip out of a soapy hand, or hydroplane off the edge of the tub.
But, when you’re a baby, and something in your vicinity breaks, you’re used to being the culprit. It seems to me the Johnson’s bottles were ALWAYS shattering. Only enuf the memory doesn’t involve any blood, just the sound of the breakage followed immediately by my own loud wails! (Also missing from the memory::the officiating adult telling me it wasn’t MY fault…)
So,that’s from when I was a baby, obviously,, witness the emblematic shampoo —and also before shampoo and everything else started routinely being packaged in plastic.
    Can you even imagine?
Not so happy a memory as yours Judy, but OTOH it is some consolation to remember the particular disadvantages of infancy…

      1. Thank you, Hypatia 🙂 I don’t remember glass bottles for shampoo, but I definitely remember Johnson’s baby shampoo, and it did sting like crazy-I actually think the no more tears version was around when I was a little kid, but not sure if it really worked liked advertised? Or maybe I am misremembering, I can’t remember 🙂
