When my husband and I moved to our wilderness preserve we were made aware of certain rules:
- No mail boxes painted in colors that don’t blend in with the natural environment. I had to re-paint mine because I originally painted it to match my Nantucket blue home. (And that color was a concern initially until people saw it.)
- No drive lanes painted on the wide boulevard that meanders throughout the preserve.
- No sidewalks and all dog walkers have to use undeveloped property for peeing and pooping.
- The deer are a protected species and no chasing them off, so I had my landscaper put in a snack bar in the back full of their favorite cheap plants. I like having them around anyway. 🙂
- No street lamps.
- No golf carts or unattended strangers without a code to get in through the gates.
If I were in my twenties, I would never live here but I simply adore the serenity and peace now in my middle-aged years. Naples was such a noisy turn-off I had to leave all those wonderful amenities and climate.
However, I took pause today. This is No Florida and the heart of Trump country. Several houses put out Trump/Pence signs in their front yards this week and were told to take them down. (Not part of the wildlife plan.)
I was saddened by this but husband said “We knew what we were signing up for when we bought the property.” And fortunately, everybody has an American flag flying in front of their homes so that brought some comfort to a woman devoted entirely to the concept of free speech.
Your husband is right. A homeowners association has unlimited powers, and it’s all a matter of private contract. A municipality couldn’t ban political signs . Anyway:happy to hear they were Trump signs!
Our caretaker has built a cannon for the Memorial Day parade, which is the only thing our murrain celebrates. (;it’s not a real cannon, but it looks great—he seems to have access to an unlimited supply of wagon wheels) He put it out front along with a buncha flags, some bunting along the fence. I stuck a Trump flag in the Barrel. I knew one of the prog assholes with whom I currently have to share my Property would remove it, so I attached a note to it:”Hello, you officious busybody….” I have had all I can take with these bozos…

You can still sport the hat and t-shirt, can’t you, Liz? *Be* the campaign sign if you can’t *plant* one. Take the coffee cup/thermos to the bistro; carry the tote/water bottle to the gym/salon. Work that swag, girl! Go for it!

HOAs (home owner’s association) suck but they are better than the alternative. I live in an HOA governed gated community. It is worth it 99.9% of the time.

They are worth it and get this one: mine is merely $1200 dollars a YEAR! (In Naples, that would be a monthly fee.)
Golf carts aren’t permitted because they add to the traffic (cars and bikes) and that would upset the deer and the runners. 🙂
Dude, how funny is this that I’m living in an EPA dreamworld and I despise tree huggers! Oddly enough, our house is considered an “example” because we did spend some donuts on the landscaping; the front yard looks like an English garden in full bloom and the association is now sending prospective buyers over to our home to review the possibilities.
Giggling at the irony of it all.

You give yourself funny?

Just surprised at the irony. I used to refuse to re-cycle years ago because I was instructed to. Sound like anyone else you know? 🙂

No golf carts? That seems harsh, dude.

They might not like my “4-wheel-drive” transport, either. Sounds like Mackinac Island, Liz.

Indeed! I loved that place growing up though. Went up every summer as a kid. 🙂

My only experience of it involves watching “Somewhere in Time”.
