Let’s just say I wasn’t prepared to deal with guerrilla warfare when I moved to NYC at age 22: spoiled suburban upbringing and private southern all white university but the will to survive reigns supreme!
I stared down some pretty scary gang- bangers in the subway; it might have been the pink headband that intimidated them. 🙂
Somebody tried to mug me once on Central Park West but the adrenaline kicked in and he did not get my handbag. Funny how fear did not play a factor but pure outrage did.
Does this mean I could have made a good Marine if I’d only had the appropriate physique?

I wish I could agree with you, Liz, but I fear for this young girl and others like her: I wish that all young women knew how to survive, but unfortunately that is not the case, and in some cases, the ones who are the most confident and least afraid are the ones in most danger.
