I don’t know the exact numbers but it is a good guess that we could take the SF’s budget and be able to field twice as many probably more like 4x the number of Marine infantrymen (0311s) with those taxdollars.
For the same investment, would you rather have 1,000 Green Berets doing what they do or 2,000-4,000 US Marine grunts doing what they do?

Wow, I hadn’t thought about how expensive Special Forces are. 2,000 or 4,000 U.S. Marine Grunts definitely sound scarier and more effective than 1,000 Green Berets.
Their level of talent needs to be used daily in ‘leg’ and airborne infantry formations and not as a break the glass in case of emergency. I believe that by creating teams of all-stars you become reluctant to use those studs in conventional combat situations; therefore, all that sorely needed talent is wasted and/or underutilized for +20 man-years in some cases.
It sounds like the Green Berets don’t have a good PR team behind them. We often hear of things done by the Navy Seals, but the only thing most citizens know about the Green Berets is that they exist, somewhere. π
You have to stop leaving these cryptic comments for civilians to interpret! π
Now you’re going to have to explain what Green Berets have to do with the Soviet Union; you’ve got a captive audience interested to learn!

1. That nobody knows anything about them is reason #1.
If they were that good, they should have at least one success that got leaked to the public.

2. They drain the infantry of its best enlisted leaders.
They are to the Army what Blackwater was to SOC.

3. They are an expensive tool in the DOD’s tool kit.
America, believe it or not, does not have unlimited resources of men, materiel and/or treasure.

You are welcome. Thanks for making me think a bit more deeply about this.

4. In case of a ground war with China, we will need our best infantry leaders in large formations.
SF is not going to parachute into outer-Mongolia and create a rebel force to attack their neighbors.

5. In a war of attrition numbers matter.

I’m just making a somewhat educated and very dated guess.

I suppose the role and requirement of Green Beret have enhanced, much more than what it was in the past.

Maybe, but they need to do a better job of explaining to the average citizen what bang he is getting for his buck.

It is up to the leadership to give them tasks. If they are treated like expensive toys, then obviously they would not be used extensively.
