My husband mentioned this afternoon that tomorrow was 9/11. He was shocked I didn’t immediately remember but that is because after 19 years I don’t acknowledge that date any longer. I think about it every damned day.
I think about my friends at Cantor Fitzgerald and my fraternity little brother who had just started his new job after graduating. He was 22 years old when he died jumping off the 81st floor.
I think about the fact that I lived one block from WTC-1 and that my husband and I took that subway every morning to work at 9 a.m.
I think about how we would have been unable to return to our home in Battery Park for months and my beloved and diabetic cat would have died a lonely and painful death.
I think about the fact that a Muslim developer was given permission by Bloomberg to develop a mosque one block away- an Islamic sign of victory- but changed his mind and developed 45 Park Place Condo Tower instead. I curse anyone who has chosen to reside there.
Most of all, I I think about and thank the First Responders: the FDNY, the NYPD and the thousands of New Yorkers who lined up to give blood (unfortunately not necessary) and those who spent time handing out food and water to those wonderful heroes working on that tragic site.
God Bless all of you. You make me proud and again, you are never out of my thoughts especially now as you continue to face new challenges.
Thank you so much for this, Liz. I am so sorry for your loss, for your losses. My cousin, Tara Creamer, was on the first plane. Two men from her hometown of Westfield, MA also perished in the attack. Their names were Brian Murphy and Daniel Trant. They both worked for Cantor Fitzgerald.
Every year, Tara, Brain and Daniel are remembered in a service at the Sons of Erin in Westfield. This year’s service has been cancelled because of Covid, but my mother and I will visit the monument that has been built for them, and say a prayer. Even after all these years, I still can’t believe that this is happening, that this happened.

Thanks, Liz, but this is too good to hide from the world’s lurkers. Stay in the fight, Rocky!

🙂 I just didn’t want to ruin the Thai Beauty Pageant thread. I hate being the Grim Reaper.
