Duncan Robinson 3 for 3 for 3

I was just watching a bit of basketball and see this kid hit the first bucket of the game on a set play. His second shot, he makes off the dribble and the third is a catch and shoot. This kid is going to be great! Oh yea, is it racist of me to mention that Robinson is white and played at Williams College, a Division III team before transferring to Michigan?

He just missed an unbalanced shot fading out of bounds and is now 3 for 4 from all past the 3-point line.

The officiating is worse than terrible. They won’t call a charge. I’m turning it off.

Robinson is now 4 for 5. He never takes 2-pointers it would seem. Ha, Robinson now 4 of 6. That last shot of this phenom was from the corner and was an airball in an empty stadium. He would have gotten an ‘ear full’ in a pre-Flu Manchu world.

He is one beloved Wolverine! And you forgot to mention he attended Exeter pre-college. There has been a lot of controversy over the years about white players making it to the NBA.

Here’s a good one: Many coaches at the earliest ages begin discriminating against white players and in doing so, discourage them from participating from the start. In other words, the white guy can never outplay the black guy and won’t be allowed to start.

Love to hear Larry Bird or John Stockton’s commentary on this one!

    1. 1976 was in another century, dude. Are you referring to the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid? One of the greatest moments in American sports and our win over the Russians is still inexplicable to me today. πŸ™‚

This would be a post I’d like to write about cultural influences upon sports:

      1. Why is the NBA 98% black?
      2. Why is MLB overrepresented by Hispanics?
      3. Why is the NHL overrepresented by Canadians and Russians?
      4. Golf- all white and Tiger doesn’t count. He is the UN with a remarkably diverse background.
      5. Tennis- all white save the magnificent Williams sisters but that was a unique circumstance. Their father started them on this journey at a young age and never let up.
      6. NFL is still somewhat diverse but the big changes have come at the QB position. More black players throwing the ball- Cam Newton, Russell Wilson, etc.
      7. Snowboarding- my favorite sport of all. All white but some remarkable gender diversity.

It’s an interesting topic and I truly believe it is a culturally influenced one.

Leaving on a biz trip tomorrow so I’ll share observations (for what they’re worth) when I get home.

    1. Some of the white commentators never even played the game and I am annoyed by that as I am annoyed by the eye candy who asks ridiculous questions of players after the game. Whenever I hear “How did you feel?” I cringe.

I loved Steve Young when he commentated and Troy Aikman. Jordan hates that type of thing but wouldn’t he be fun to listen to and learn from?

Also enjoyed Charles Barkley and Kenny Anderson because they were both all-stars with a witty sense of humor.

My “girl” was Cheryl Miller who played in the WNBA and as a youth was considered to be a better player than her famous brother.

      Meritocracy, dude.

      1. I have always enjoyed Charles Barkley’s commentary. Agree or disagree with him, I believe he is brutally honest.

My feeling is that white commentators are becoming persona non grata in the NBA. Surely there are some Bill Walton types who may have not been super stars but have tons of basketball IQ. Maybe I am being too critical but it seems like just another ‘sign of the times.’
