I have no dog in the abortion fight. Having carried and borne, I personally would not do it, Not beyond a few weeks, and the only other woman whose womb I care about will not be consulting me if ever confronted with the issue. (In fact, in our state she would not have had to consult me even during her minority!)
But the fact that the issue is SOOOOO important to mine enemies is causing me to rethink my indifference.
To hear the Dems talk about abortion, you would think pregnancy is tantamount to cancer. It could strike any woman, any time! And to deny that woman, any woman, the surgery which can eliminate the tumor amounts to …oh, let’s say “gynocide”, as if we made it illegal to seek to get rid of breast or uterine cancer!
Now, with poor Judge Barrett in the Dems’ crosshairs, it looks like abortion may be the pivotal issue in the election.
Whatsoever the Dems worship, lo, even that I abhor.
I mean, really, gentles, how long have we had inexpensive and (fairly) effective birth control available to any lady who declines to gestate just at present? To hear the Dems rant you’d think it didn’t exist! And you’d also think the only way to get access to it is through your employer! As if there isNt an entire aisle at CVS euphemistically blazoned “Family Planning”…..girls, skip the moisturizer, the depilation kits, and invest in one of those Li’l kits instead. (Oh and if you have trouble reading the directions, pick up a pair of reading glasses too.)
WTF are the Dems up to, really, in presenting women as helpless victims of their biology?
Itvalso occurs to me that the Dem women I know who endorse this maternalistic attitude toward our sex do NOT think it applies to THEM, they of course, are aware and capable, but oh! Those poor gormless women of the Other Ranks.
Classism and sexism may not be the worst of it, though. I need to rethink the issue in light of The Dems’ passion for abortion.
Thank you for this post, Hypatia. Democrat commitment to abortion never ceases to amaze me-the fervor and enthusiasm they have for it is unreal.

I don’t know. Abortion on demand, through the whole nine months and beyond, even, is the hill they are willing to die on? Why? I don’t get it.
It isn’t unusual, in pro-life circles, to hear stories of someone taking a picture of an abortion clinic and what appears to be Satan’s face appears in the picture. I have never seen such a picture myself, but have heard about them plenty of times. I used to think the people talking about these pictures were being loopy, but with everything that is going on, it seems less loopy all the time. It isn’t just abortion: leftists are burning down cities, killing people, driving people to suicide. More and more, it seems as though they just want death and destruction however it comes. The devil is the only one who gains from that.

“Not beyond a few weeks…”
This is truly what most pro-choicers believe; take personal responsibility early on and cause no pain.

Now that it’s permitted to snip a child’s spinal cord as they’re emerging from the womb in two states (NY & VA, if memory serves), “not beyond a few weeks” doesn’t quite hold anymore. As well, its genesis in this country in eugenics toward people of color, is coming to light. It’s a sacrament on the altar of personal autonomy to these people….If one wants a legal “right”, at least let it not be federally-funded, and/or legislated. (Oh, and, Iceland has ‘eliminated’ Down Syndrome from its population this way, as well.)

This is a topic I swore I would never engage in but I am a pro-choicer with rules. The first trimester rule is one I would discard and replace with 3-4 weeks. Understand I realize this does not address the ‘right to life’ and most pro-choicers respect and understand that life begins at conception. Instead, we are represented by Planned Parenthood and supporters of partial birth.
We’re angry about this because we do not consider ourselves barbarians.

Thank you, Liz. Most who support legal abortion have far more in common with you than with Planned Parenthood. The problem is Roe V Wade. I am against abortion, but even more than that, I am for the people making these decisions, not nine unelected judges. If Roe v Wade is overturned, the issue of abortion will return to the states, where it belongs, and where voters and elected representatives can craft legislation that better represents how their communities feel about abortion.

“A topic I swore I would never engage in“…..#metoo, cuz we know what would happen elsewhere. Another tribute to the freethinking, nay, licentious😜 atmosphere our host has created here! Thanks dear Saint!

No question, Liz; you believe in a rules-based order, guided by personal responsibility and societal consensus. I would probably be comfortable with a state-law based approach to this, without federal mandates or funding; and networking to promote programs encouraging personal responsibility and adoption, so that “abortion-as-birth-control” isn’t a norm, and that it can truly be – as the movement used to say – safe, legal, and *rare*. No more Gosnells.

Be it said that I’m personally-opposed, and hopeful, because the numbers are coming down; and young people’s attitudes toward the vulnerable (on both ends of the spectrum) tend toward solidarity, more and more. Amen. These militant, shrieking remnants of a movement will not prevail.

I just wish young women would take birth control a bit more seriously. We have an overall 40% illegitimacy rate in this country:
1. 70% in the black community
2. 50%in the Hispanic community
3. 30% in the Caucasian community
This is simply unacceptable because it is the number one cause of poverty. I almost laugh for crying that Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan-D called this out in the early 70s when the black illegitimacy rate was a “mere” 25%. He knew what was coming down the road and he was right.

Some of this is perpetuated by localities, states, and the feds, who want to foster a culture of dependency – and it’s decimated the black family. Thos. Sowell, Jason Riley, and others are still writing about and decrying this…Kevin Williamson writes similarly re: Appalachia. If there’s any systemic problem in this country, it’s perpetuated poverty and dependency, for sure. Wouldn’t it be superb to get people to cut the Gordian knot/back away from the trough? (I wonder if Moynihan would recognize the Democrats today?)

Well, but. Just because a baby is born out of wedlock doesn’t mean the baby was unplanned. Lots of unmarried women get pregnant on purpose, for all kinds of reasons. From what I can tell, women who seriously don’t want to get pregnant usually don’t. The ones who do are usually either consciously or subconciously getting pregnant on purpose. Not sure what to do about this, but birth control only goes so far.

Point taken. I blame the U.S. govt for aiding, abetting and supporting this.

Stay in school. No “hookup” sex. Put down roots. Work at something you love that will support you. Nurture a relationship that leads to marriage. Welcome children. Build a society that supports a country.

Nanda, I often wonder about the Founders. They’d probably storm the House and Senate and challenge a lot of Dems and even Reps to a duel!
