I remember the Nixon-McGovern election. McG wanted to limit the amount anyone could pass on to their heirs to $250K. (That sounds laughable now, but back in them days most Americans couldn’t reasonably hav expected to die with that large an estate. 250K, 500K per couple was the threshold for the Federal estate tax for many years. )
Wellsir, EVERYBODY was incensed by that idea! The government telling me I can’t leave my stuff to my kids?!? I MIGHT die rich, after all, anything can happen! McGovern is a fucking commie! Nixon, not exactly a universally beloved president even pre-Watergate, won in a landslide.
But that was then, this is now. The Left’s long march through academe is complete and they are bivouacking-and shooting the wounded. The American people are no longer horrified by such ideas. They like ‘em. They WANT the gov’t to take from the rich, and take care of them, “cradle to grave”, as my parents used to sneer.
Rebuttal: Whatcha gonna do when there ARE no more rich people, y’ever think of THAT? Yeah that’s pathetic and it’s the best I can do, because our once great American demos has been wussified.

Oh PS, of course it doesn’t happen that “there are no more rich people”, it’s just, the rich will be Communist party members,(or whatever the kids are calling the revolutionary elite these days). See Yeats:
