Private Enterprise

As most of you know we sold our home in Naples in a public neighborhood, bought a couple of acres in a forest preserve up North that was privately owned and incurred some rules regarding architecture, landscaping, etc. This would normally bother me but I was simply thrilled to live in a hood with space and nobody gave us flack for what we wanted to do.

All good.

My husband was elected to the Board of Directors because everyone in the community admired his work and he recently attended a meeting regarding new “lot” owners who wanted to do the following:

  1. RV garages. OMG.
  2. Median stripes on our beautiful open boulevard that winds throughout the preserve, stop signs, political signs, and gasp! bike lanes which I despise from previous experience in the SW.
  3. Permit motorcycles, golf carts or any vehicle that creates noise and inconvenience.

Residents are really happy around here with the peace and quiet and the fact that neighbor’s pets cannot relieve themselves on your lawn. The owners of this preserve have sold this property as a Shangri-La and indeed it is.

Now the nouveau are taking us all to court. So much for low maintenance HOA fees! As an aside, if Kamala Harris attempts to force private landowners to provide low-income housing in my neighborhood, I may have to buy a gun.

  1. Great post, Liz! Why isn’t it at the top of the page? Is honey wombat at work again, lol? 🙂

Before reading this post, I had never even heard of an RV garage. Had no idea such a thing even existed 🙂

  2. My original post wouldn’t publish for some reason and Word Press made me schedule my post! I’d annoy Simon with this but it’s too early in Thailand. 🙂

  3. Egads, Liz! Your pretty ‘n’ pink landscaping, your enviable lap-pool, and your lovely lanai are surrounded by this shtuff? Boo-le-Hoo, sez I. How horrid!

    1. Thanks for the kind compliments Nanda. As we all know, you can run but somehow can never hide from the tasteless.

I am feeling optimistic, however, because my husband rcvd 10 calls today from outraged community members who I sense will not allow this to happen. We enjoy our current neighbors because they’re just as stubborn as we are about maintaining standards. 🙂

  4. What do you mean the newbies are suing? If these things are forbidden by the bylaws of the HOA, they can’t change ‘em without gettin* the approval of a super-majority of owners, can they? They couldn’t in my state…

My latest article on Pa’s fortune-telling statute, is published this month. So now I need a new topic. I’m thinking of writing about whether HOAs and the private deed restrictions of planned communities can save the suburbs from the depredations of AFFH.

  5. There is no such thing as private restrictions anymore; dontcha know Hyp? People will try anything to overturn definitive choice but you are right about the HOA. Fearless Leader (my husband) will see to this but the fight does get tiresome.
