America’s Child

Taking a break from watching a documentary about one of my favorite athletes of all time- Tiger Woods.

For one moment, let us set aside his aberrant personal behavior in the latter part of his career.

This documentary focused upon race, race and race referring to Tiger as the first “African-American” to win the Masters. He responded with this comment (and I quote him loosely):

“I am Asian, African, Native American and Caucasian. If you think I’m going to ignore my mother’s heritage (Thai) you’re wrong. In fact, I’ll quote her verbatim, I am an American.”

Needless to say the media and African-American community went ballistic and what truly struck me was the lack of focus on meritocracy. Tiger was on the Mike Douglas show at age 3 demonstrating his putting skills! His father worked endlessly to help him develop his God-given talent and his work ethic was second to none.

Isn’t this truly what our country used to represent?

  1. Tiger Woods is almost without a doubt the best ambassador for the game of golf in the history of the game of life forever (GOLF).

Also he really exposed the athleticism required to ‘hit stick’ well, and has brought more first rate athletes into the sport.

  2. It was inspired by my father who golfed 7 days a week and loved Tiger for all the right reasons. To quote him:

“To hell with Nicklaus and Palmer; Tiger is the most exciting player I’ve ever watched.” He was genuinely in despair if Tiger blew a round during a tournament.

  3. Phil Mickelson is still a blast to watch. Now he plays on the senior tour more often than the PGA. Why not? It is like taking Candi from a baby. I think he won the first three, four or five tournaments he played in. Must have pissed off some of the other old timers on that tour.

  4. “Phil Mickelson”

Has he not joined the still-bipedally-ambulatory members of my tribe, in the last few years, ST? Could that be a reason for playing on the ‘senior tour’? I give him props for continuing to do what he loves – and excels at!
