Can Progressives Be Swayed?(2 of 2)

In my attempt to enlighten a colleague concerning the joys of conservatism, have been pleased to discover that I am actually a hypocritical, conservative Christian, to name the only name he called me which is suitable to be read in mixed company. Also found out that Affirmative Action was designed to help white women break through the glass ceiling; and I couldn’t really follow this one but as best as I can tell, the Civil War was fought to maintain the North’s economic supremacy over slave states. I had no idea.

Until fairly recently believed that race relations had generally improved over my lifetime and that the Great Society programs, while good intentioned, had failed the black community miserably. Apparently my belief system, whether I realize it or not, is a social contract between white men only; and according to Charles Mills’ 1997 book, The Racial Contract, there exists an almost invisible contract between white men to ensure our rights and freedoms while making possible and justifying the exploitation of non-whites. Racial contract theory probably even explains the latest diabolical conservative scheme put in play by electing and re-electing Dear Leader. Surely you must realize that because Obama is black, his hands are tied as far as directly helping the black community.

My mini-survey shows that our message of free market capitalism, freedom, and rugged individualism is not being received. Before moving to sanctuary states and initiating the second civil war, seems to me that we should make a concerted effort to put more Tea Party types in office. To do that we’ll need to get more votes from somewhere. Maybe we can still save our country if we acknowledge that many progressives actually believe that we are evil bastards, and find a way to convince them otherwise. My colleague is not a low information voter. He has his beliefs; and by God, he will not be moved. Assuming many progressives believe as he does, we are seen as having no or next to no compassion for anyone that does not look like us; and if we can’t somehow manipulate social welfare programs to our benefit, want to eliminate them.

I am convinced that we can bring some Democratic voters over to our side, but not without engaging them and slowly chipping away at their belief system. This is not work for the timid. We will not sway the progressives without strategic messaging. We really must re-evaluate the situation and develop an integrated campaign plan to address it. Our senior Republican leaders, advisers, and campaign managers are not getting the job done. Don’t expect Rush, Ann Coulter, David Horowitz, etc., to do this by themselves. We need to improve our message, and all of us need to work harder at getting it out.

  1. Amen. I really think this is not possible without prayer and love, and it can be extremely difficult to love people who seem to hate us. I once worked with a young woman whom I got along with very well, until she found out that I was pro-life. Immediately, all of her defenses went up and she gave me dagger eyes. I tried to be as gentle with her as I could. She told me that was pro-choice, and she asked if I thought that she was a bad person. I was surprised by that. I assured her that I did not think she was a bad person. She then started grilling me with every intellectual question in the book about abortion, including and especially the really hard cases. I stood my ground, and defended the pro-life position, even in the really hard cases, but I tried to be as gentle and loving about it as I could. Finally, she broke down and told me that she had had an abortion, and that she regretted it. She said that she and her boyfriend just cried for months after the abortion, because they felt so horrible about it. She said that she would go to Church and just sit in back, because she knew that wasn’t supposed to go to communion, and she was too afraid to go to confession. She and I became friends, and I directed her to people who could help with post abortion healing.

Pro-lifers have been very successful at converting people-not successful enough yet, but it is remarkable how many pro-lifers are converts. The difference is, abortion is just one issue, whereas what you experienced with your colleague was an all encompassing world view. That makes it harder, but prayer and love are always the answer.

That is because all of the above require diligence and hard work to maintain. People have forgotten that freedom is constantly under attack and must not be taken for granted. The infamous “limousine liberals” are looking for something to do because, frankly, our Founders did the heavy lifting. This all meshes perfectly with NOW and the NAACP; those organizations accomplished much in the beginning thereby leaving many people with too much time on their hands!

We have become a nation of whiners, but thank goodness there are still some doers.

Where are the pro- choicers like my family and friends? My father once said very quietly, “I have no argument with people who believe that life begins at conception. Abortion is not an ideal solution in any case but since we’ve legalized it, we should impose stricter regulations i.e. time frames in order to avoid pain to the fetus, etc.”

Partial birth abortion is a topic most choicers won’t even discuss. We aren’t even mentioned or are considered traitors by the radical factions.
