There is wisdom in avoiding the sun. I have lived in the North for most of my life, but spent a year in Hawaii. I met some girls there who grew up in California. They were only in their early 20s, but even at that young age, they were very wrinkled. I had never seen such young women with wrinkles before.
English women and other European women used to avoid the sun as well. Thatâs what parasols were for. To be pale meant that obviously you werenât a manual laborer. I think I asked you this before, Simon, but does the sun avoidance mean they want to look like white women, or just they want to look upper class?
( But that photo of them all hiding in the shadow of a telephone pole is very funny!)
It’s interesting because before we realized the dangers of a nice tan, it was a status symbol here implying that you could afford to vacation in sun-soaked resorts. đ
I think tan started to be beautiful about a century ago, the Roaring Twenties, Scott and Zelda sporting about on the beaches of the French Riviera, Yâknow, like in âTender is the Nightâ…..
This is probably “wise”, except using the telephone pole as a parasol, that is. đ But the underlying climate of ‘risk-aversion’ that seems so prevalent now saddens me; and the fact that it’s reached ‘the land of smiles’ makes it worse. (The other pics on the site more than make up for this one, though.) P.S. Working on a couple of posts: CSL cont’d. and Paul of Tarsus…Stay tuned.
Muslim women face severe Vit D deficiencies because they are never allowed to uncover themselves. D is important and it doesn’t have to result in skin cancer; it is a known mood enhancer and promotes serotonin.
See this thread: What screams “I’m Thai”?
It should be at the top of the page. Then click on the “more” button for some amazing photos from the land of smiles.

You’re not kidding! What a bore all the lecturing has become.

If Scott and Zelda were the poster children, maybe the 1920s roared a bit too loudly?

It was the last gasp before FDR and his anti-capitalist policies attempted to bring down this country so I would have said … “Let it rip.” đ

Fair enough: “Let the good times roll….Even if they roll over us.” works, too. đ

I have met otherwise intelligent Thai ladies who will not take up golf because of the exposure to natural vitamin D.
