Sartorial Sadness

Not that it’s warm here; I think we’re gonna get snow tomorrow night. But it is mid-April. Soon I will have to put my velvet clothes away. I have no idea who decrees this stuff, y’know, like no white shoes after Labor Day, but I have heard you can’t wear velvet after March 15.

I love velvet, especially the stretchy kind. It’s so rich and luxe and it feels so good (I’m told) when people hug you . But in this sackcloth ‘n’ashes, jeans’n’sweatshirt winter of 2020-21, I didn’t get to wear my velvets at all. No parties. No fancy restaurants. No trips.

And yeah, no big deal! Sheesh, I shouldn’t even be mentioning it. But Hey: i gotta be me. I’m going to MISS velvet. I always do, but more so this year because we haven’t really spent any time together. When I put those clothes away, I’ll make a wish for a more festive winter starting next November.

  1. Actually, some people already are. When my Uncle Jim died several weeks ago, they had a wake for him that was open to everyone. We stayed the whole time; there were tons of people there, and no one was social distancing, people were hugging and kissing, nobody cared. We all wore masks, I guess because we didn’t want TPTB to kick us out. But, no one seemed to be afraid of Covid. They did limit the actual funeral to immediate and extended family: they did this because Uncle Jim was a popular guy in his small town, and TPTB at the small Church put a limit on how many people can be in the Church at one time. They didn’t want to have to turn anyone away. And there was a nice gathering afterwards for immediate and extended family.

I go to restaurants all the time. They are not at full capacity here in Massachusetts, but they are definitely open. Why can’t you go to a fancy restaurant in Pennsylvania? Are the restaurants there all closed?

  2. Actually, we were out tonight, at our fave pub, which is bout 40 mins way from our house. The bar is open again! But our waitress said they’re having trouble getting staff. Either people are still afraid, or they’re on unemployment, so no hurry getting back to the grind.
But here in Rural-Tania, we don’t have any fancy, dress-up,restaurants. Hafta go to NY or Phila for that.

    1. A forty minute drive to go to your favorite pub? See, this is why I don’t live (totally) in a rural area. Although some would say that all of Western Mass is rural, but only a city slicker would say that 🙂

      1. Nah, there’s reading, music, favorite movies/classic tv, phone/video calls, cooking – and hanging out with d’Ettes, ‘Sieurs, and His Graciously Unleashedness, right here.
