My Choice for NYC Mayor

Curtis Sliwa

This picture brought back a lot of memories when I was young and afraid in a then feral NYC. I couldn’t afford cabs so I was on subways late at night at times and always breathed a sigh of relief when I saw the red berets of the Guardian Angels. I even saw Curtis several times. Both men and women participated in this group of young people who decided to take back the city and aid the woefully understaffed MTA personnel.

This was under the reign of Mayor Koch who worked assiduously to stop this group because they made him look bad and he even, at one point, referred to them as ‘vigilantes.’

Former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani endorses Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa in Republican mayoral primary and so do I!!

  1. I always breathed a sigh of relief when I saw these kids patrolling the subway. FYI, most of them came from the most dangerous hood in NY- the Bronx- and I used to follow them from car to car as a form of protection. We all loved them because they truly represented that old saying “Take back the night” and best of all, were already familiar with the criminal “tells.”

      1. Koch was strangely quite popular. I never liked him- all talk, do nothing type of guy.

Rudy was my man; no talk and I’ll hit you when you least expect it. You want to jump over a subway turnstile or spray graffiti on the side of a building? You’re busted and guess what? We found you on the “most wanted” list for serious felonies. He was a Great Cop.

xxoo to the G-man for improving my quality of life!

      2. Also agree wholeheartedly with this, Liz; Koch was a personality in the mayor’s office. Giuliani was a working mayor, for sure. (Can you explain to me what brought Bernard Kerik down? I never understood his fall from grace.)

    1. P.S. Kerik was pawned off on Homeland Security after his falling out with RG and vetted. Unfortunately, there was evidence of tax evasion.

  2. I did not speak with me but met him briefly. So much to say Ms. Dunn…another lifetime and like you, I lived in Manhattan and was familiar with many of the same people. Got to go. Family is coming.
