Happy 4ID©

Strange on this day to realize I am at or near the apex of dudes my country’s Ruling Class wants you to believe are most likely to be terrorists: White, male, Christian, military veteran, alcoholic, and a smoker to boot.

My friends advised me n0t t0 seek counseling f0r fear the Feds will 0ne day use that as an excuse t0 deny me my 2d Amendment.

  1. I am pretty sure that if you pay for the counseling totally on your own, without involving the government or insurance agencies, it will stay totally private. Either that, or consider getting counseling from a Catholic priest. They are sworn to secrecy, upon pains of everything. And, as bad as the Catholic Church has been on so many things, Catholic priests are famously good at keeping their mouths shut, even at great personal expense. It’s what they do.

  2. JaC, not so sure about privacy; even I as a non-ordained Catholic chaplain nearly 30 years ago, was subject to mandatory reporting. Also, the “seal” of the confessional is almost continually under legal threat….

    1. Thank you for the warning, Nanda. I have never heard of a priest outing someone who confessed to him. I have heard of priests going to prison rather than outing those who confessed to them, but I haven’t looked into it really at all. I would hope that priests would go to prison or even die before betraying the trust of those who confess to them. After everything else they have effed up, the sanctity of the confessional is pretty much all the Catholic Church has left. If they throw that away, they are totally effed.

      1. No priest I know would even consider breaking the “seal”; but secular jurisdictions want it broken, mightily…So far, the line holds – even with imprisonment and martyrdom as risks. Thanks be!

    2. Actually, though, wouldn’t going to confession behind the screen address this problem? The priest can’t report you if he doesn’t know who you are. It might be a little tricky to arrange regular counseling appointments this way, but I bet it could be done, and I bet you wouldn’t even have to spend that much time looking to find a priest who would do it.

      1. It isn’t a matter of “how”, or “where”, it’s more a matter of “what” is confessed. Face-to-face still invokes the seal; strolling around an empty parish parking lot before Mass – when everyone’s in church – still invokes the seal

    1. So, I take it that there are no Catholic churches or priests in Thailand’s Golden Triangle region? First of all, are you totally sure of that? Catholics seem to find their way everywhere. 🙂

But, if there really aren’t any priests where you are, then come home! We have lots of priests here 🙂

    2. One can ask a priest /minister, or any helping professional for counsel in confidence; the seal only applies to sacramental confession in the Catholic Church. As to one’s 2nd Amendment rights, they only apply here, don’t they? Most jurisdictions are more than happy to infringe upon them; it’s part of their history/culture

      1. “Home” isn’t what it used to be, JaC. America functions as a secular, bureaucratic technocracy that no longer respects freedom of conscience (in practice). Freedom of thought/speech are threatened (in theory, on the way to practice).

Home may exist in our localities/neighborhoods, but only because individuals/families who know what Home is like are there. Many of those coming up behind them have no idea.

    1. They represent no one. They do not represent America or American conservatives. If you were here, you would know that. Come home!

      1. They represent those in power at the top – the managerial elites – who thrive no matter who’s in office at 1600. Eisenhower warned us about these permanent civil servants….

      3. Yes, they are, JaC Every petty bureaucrat anywhere is one of them, or relies on them: DMV ring a bell? 😀

    1. I think everybody needs counseling from time to time. This is one thing that the Catholic Church got right, and was far ahead of its time in.

      2. Yup. Thanks to monastic life – and the Celtic idea of an anam chara (spelling?) or ‘soul friend’ – public confession before one’s home congregation and bishop became private between you and your abbot/abbess or your pastor.

    2. In the sense of renewing the inner resources we all rely on, dear Hypatia, a non-judgmental listener, who’s heard nearly everything before, can come in handy; btw, ‘counseling’ is often part of a chaplain’s military job description, so I don’t think our ST is unfamiliar with the idea. 😀

  4. The first time I went to counseling was in college, when I realized that I could not trust my female friends to keep their mouths shut, and also because I didn’t want to gossip about other people. There were things I needed to say that I could not say to my friends. I kind of knew then, and definitely know now, that my therapist was a feminist dingbat, but even so, it was very helpful to have a place where I could speak my mind, knowing that it wouldn’t be repeated, and knowing that I wasn’t hurting anyone with gossip.

      1. For the Chaps, it’s liberating in some ways, too, ST; knowing that you’re trusted, accepted, maybe even loved by comrades/colleagues means a lot – if you’re anywhere near good at what you do.

    It could be worse.

What if you were a blonde, fiscally conservative WASP who likes the stock market and Prada shoes.? 🙂

      1. I’d say it’s “even-up”, JaC. Look at what they’ve done to independent women journalists, like Sheryl Attkinson. Savvy, honest, successful, truth-loving women scare the bureaucrats witless.

      1. Brains- and those who know how to use them -are the first line of defense and offense. Ideas and words – trying to warp what’s real, true, good, and beautiful is already long underway. Getting people to mistrust themselves – and distrust others – especially children is starting to make headway, but is getting pushback. (“Don’t tread on me”, anyone?) It’s gonna be tough, but we’ll make it – if we want to.
