Ok, I’m an English major and will always react as one so had to list my least favorite abuses of our language:
- Woke.
- Xenophobia.
- Sexism, gender discrimination.
- People of color. (This one oddly bothers me the most perhaps because I am an ex-retailer and understand that white is on the color wheel.)
- Hyphenated- Americans. I am of Scottish-English descent and would never refer to myself as a British-American. Why is that acceptable with other ethnic groups?
- Gender neutral/fluidity. Honestly, I’m lost here. I have three docs in my immediate family who refer to chromosomes… period.
- Nationalism. Is this supposed to be a bad thing? I don’t live in pre-WWII Germany, so…
- White privilege. No such thing! 90% of the wealth in this country is earned.
Pls feel free to post your own personal lists. I’d be more than interested in reading them!
As a fellow English major, I heartily concur. May I add “impactful” to this list of linguistic loathing?

Good one!
I’d also like to add: Undocumented workers.
