I was wondering why Tucker Carlson was spending an entire week in Budapest. (Been there, enjoyed it, but was unsure about its political stability.)
Well!! I’m so impressed with PM Viktor Orbán that I am considering buying a property in Budapest.
Some excerpts from Carlson’s interview:
Orbán, speaking with “Tucker Carlson Tonight” on Thursday — was the first European leader to endorse Trump’s reelection bid, while Trump lauded Orban’s border security and counterterrorism policies, as well as endeavors to “protect and help Christian communities” throughout the world.
The Hungarian prime minister told Carlson that Biden has “limited knowledge” of his country, and therefore cannot understand the issues at hand when he makes derogatory remarks referring to Orbán as an “autocratic dictator.”
When asked if he is discouraged that his greatest ally (Trump) is no longer in power, he responded:
“National sovereignty is coming from God, and nature. All begins with us. This is our country. This is our population. This is our history, our language. We have to secure our borders.”
And then:
“But you can’t say, okay, it’s a nice country. I would like to come and live here because it’s a nicer life, it is not a human right to come here. No way. It’s our land. It’s a nation, a community, family, history, tradition, language.”
“I have faith that the American people will dismiss Biden’s policies.”
Just… wow!!!

As an aside, the PM is up for re-election next year and his opponents are both Marxists and anti-Semites. They’re all on record at Parliament.

I do not have so much faith that the next generation will see it the same way as our generations. Stuffed ballot boxes, backdoor cheating, ballot harvesting…these are third world tactics, and they have now entered American Politics. Idi Amin was purported to have garnered 98% of his counties vote. Putin gets 90% every election. We are headed that way.

I couldn’t agree more which is precisely why I admire and travel to Eastern European countries. Those citizens have truly experienced the ugliest realities under Hitler and Stalin.
They get it. We were blessed with magnificent Founders and like all prosperous societies in history, we have failed to appreciate our heritage.
It’s truly ironic because the last time my husband and I were in Eastern Europe, he hired a real estate agent to look at loft apartments in downtown Budapest. He had a sense …

I read a story earlier today that New Zealand is allowing American Millionaires/Billionaires to become instant citizens. These folks are tired of getting beat up and taxed to death simply because they were successful.

I, too, am feeling that pain. And I’m not even a billionaire!

Interesting views here, Liz and @theearthspins; all is not (entirely) lost, but the center of gravity for freedom certainly seems to be shifting – toward countries that recognize how precious it is.- and that it’s worth the work to maintain it.

I never thought I’d say this Nanda but I’m not all that interested in sticking around here anymore. The 2020 election really demoralized me and made me ashamed of my country. I’ve always been proud (even arrogantly so) of being an American, but I’ll admit to losing the faith. I absolutely feel like I’ve been robbed of my First Amendment rights and I continue to have conversations with people who end them by saying, “Let’s not talk about politics anymore.”
Well why the hell not???
I can trade on my laptop anywhere in the world and although I enjoyed Hungary, I’d kill to live in Vienna and go to the symphony twice a week, attend a Lipizzaner show every month and visit my two favorite museums.

Glad that option is open to you….

Maybe not. I’d have to convince the husband first. 🙂

My bet is on you, Liz; hoping Austria is as you’d like it to be, though.

Thanks for posting this. I’ve always admired Orban. And, um, really, every time I visit Budapest it gets better. It’s all due to him.
But I’m afraid theearthspins is right. The people no longer want what we, here, want.or, if they do, they can’t accomplish it by voting. S’like Emma Goldman said:” If voting could change anything,,they wouldn’t let us do it.”
I
N the meantime, if you can: visit Budapest!

Been to Budapest once but as I discovered in Poland, the melancholia was fairly intense. Need to go back now to see the improvements in both countries.

Both Buda and Pest rock and the cuisine is to die for!
Met a married bi-chick there. Long story short she was into redheads!

Hyp, I assume you saw Reds. Emma Goldman was the start of the problem. Quite self-impressed, she knew nothing of the ramifications of her actions. She also treated Louise Bryant as a peon and to say Eugene O’Neill (played by Nicholson) was a disappointment is an understatement.
Loved the film (because I enjoy history); disliked the characters intensely.

@ Nanda: I’ve been to Vienna four times for 10 day visits but … I understand the demographics are changing. Husband wants to go back for 2 weeks and investigate thoroughly the ramifications of living there as opposed to engaging in all the glam stuff I like to do.
