I just read a great article on Aeon Magazine (the free online magazine I’ve mentioned before): Apocalypse Please! It’s an attempt to explain why many people seem to be addicted to the omniphobic “emergency culture” , lockdowns, masking, isolation into which we were catapulted in March 2020.
Then it compares the phenom to what happened with AIDS, where we now have “bare backers”, “bug chasers” and “gift givers”— men who have unprotected sex even though they are or may be HIV positive, men who want to be exposed to the virus, and men who know they are positive and are offering to transmit the disease. Humans can be nostalgic even for loss.
It also deals with the end of the Cold War. This made me think of the Communist countries liberated in 1989: I remember reading a statement by one former East German: “It’s like my whole life up to this point counts for nothing.”
Once some people have learned a system, with its rituals, its axioms, no matter how reluctantly they participated at first, that becomes a part of their identity and they will mourn its demise.
idk, I would more uncharitably posit that they didn’t have a real strong personal identity before, if they’ve glommed on to these ridiculous privations. But maybe it ties into One above: the Covid brain fog.
I recommend the article. In generalAeon has interesting stuff, tho’ ’ some of it is pret-ty left-fringey, like the article about not farming bugs i wrote about a few weeks ago. And yesterday they had one up called The South African Model , which, apparently seriously, seemed to be saying that South Africa is a worthy model for the world in seeking to form “non-racial- societies.

No shame! This is precisely the type of comment I’d expect from those “low common denominator” members of the KKK.
Who are these people to refer to themselves as “elite?” Quite frankly, I’m more on a rampage than usual because I had the misfortune to watch Hannity last night and watch him fight against tears.
