Everyman, I think, feels no responsibility whatsoever to carry any of the burden of national defense above and beyond paying taxes of which something less than a nickel of every dollar goes to ‘Tommy.’

Everyman, in the classic sense – the one who *takes* all the hard knocks – *is* “Tommy”, to me. Not the one living in the penthouse suite. People of the Anglosphere all used to have a bit of “Tommy” in them, didn’t they?
