Random Thoughts

Full disclosure: The title is all Thomas Sowell (an old column of his) but the thoughts are most definitely mine.

  • Why is it that in the good ole days, political enemies used to cut off the conversation with “I just can’t get through to you” but now organize protests, riots, attack cops and 17 yr olds and on a smaller scale throw glasses of wine across a table in a **** restaurant?
  • Why is the First Amendment no longer applicable to the conservative right? Or does it really exist at all?
  • Why does one of the greatest Supremes in American history- Originalist Clarence Thomas- have to work so hard to de-legitimize previous precedents that were not intended as the Constitution was written? Not only has he overturned intellectually and legally bereft precedents, but continues to ignore those he hasn’t gotten to yet. (Even the great Justice Scalia described Thomas as a “bloodthirsty Originalist.”)
  • Why are so-called conservatives now backing away from originalism and describing it as “a hollow, amoral methodology that consistently fails to deliver desirable results.” Desirable to whom or to what? The flavor and/or whim of the moment? The Squad?
  • Why are liberals emphasizing “housing” as opposed to “homes?” That’s easy; homes create an environment that promote family, nationalism and independence. Ever live in a NYC apt building? After 9/11, most coops would not permit a peek of the red, white and blue out of any window.

This is a short list but I may continue to update as we move toward 2024. I’d encourage any and all to contribute.

  1. Who are the conservatives backing away from originalism? Also, good point about leftists’ use of the word “housing” instead of “homes.” I never thought about it before, but you are spot on,

    1. Many conservatives are accepting and using precedents that do not, in Thomas’s mind, adhere to how the Constitution was intended. He is the only modern judge attempting to discredit them; if unsuccessful, he is choosing to ignore them in his decisions. Scalia was another great Originalist but he always deferred to Thomas.

I knew that Thomas was an Originalist but was unaware he has spent a life’s work trying to eliminate previous federal overreach that still stands. I am impressed!

For further reading, NR has a very thorough article on this in November’s edition by Thomas’s former law clerk entitled “Clarence Thomas’s Constitutional Excavation.”

  2. Good article and poignent points raised.

The current world of tolerance and acceptance is intolerant and unaccepting unless you toe the line of public opinion bereft of facts. Blanket assumptions are preferable over reality and is promoted to achieve a goal that even the promoters of a cause don’t understand let alone those who pile on and promote a cause because it is popular rather than from personal conviction.

Does this suggest that humanity is flawed as it keeps repeating the darkest moments and traits of human history?

    1. Of course humanity is flawed! How else to explain both history and current events? Not to mention, we are all human and most of us (I hope) know that we ourselves are flawed.

      1. True, and that explains wokeness, doesn’t it? They think they have found the one true faith, they see themselves as totally innocent, and they want to burn all unbelievers at the stake. It’s not a political movement, it has turned into religious fanaticism.

  3. “After 9/11, most coops would not permit a peek of the red, white and blue out of any window.”

Could you explain this a little more, Liz? They were not allowing people to display the American flag? After 9/11???? Even in crazy Massachusetts, you can drive down the road of even liberal crazy places in Massachusetts and see the American flag. That always struck me as kind of hypocritical-a bunch of pinko commies flying the American flag, but I guess that isn’t the worst thing.

    1. Surely. Many NYC friends told me coop boards were forbidding residents to hang American flags out their windows. This is not surprising; trying to buy a coop in NY is a grueling experience. “The board” pores over job reviews, tax returns and demands recommendations. The late Rush Limbaugh couldn’t buy in a Park Avenue building because the board was afraid of conservatives he would attract.

Hard to believe, but confirmed. ):
