I read the history of this hymn once—I think the man who wrote it was at sea, during was a terrible storm, and more than one member of his family had died of the hardships of the voyage. IMHO it’s got the overused Amazing Grace beat all hollow. They guy who wrote that was a slaver, both before he wrote it and after.
