Heisman Trophy 2021

NCAA Football: Arkansas at Alabama

Congrats to Bryce Young who despite all odds (skinny, relatively short and not particularly muscular) threaded his way through the SEC conference schedule and won the most coveted award in all of college sports.

I listened to his acceptance speech and it was more than humble; he started by thanking his receivers, running backs and offensive line and of course his coach Nick Saban. Any football player worth his salt knows he is going nowhere without this gang!

Most moving of all were the commentaries made by his financially successful parents who share an intact marriage and emphasize family values. They were not looking to ‘make the lucrative deal.’

It shows. I wish this fine young man all the best in the draft but as usual, the naysayers will have something to say about his size in the NFL.

My response? Tom Brady! Mediocre arm, skinny, not a particularly spectacular college career, 6th round pick, but he had a highly intellectual ability to read defenses. Bryce Young (and I quote Coach Saban) : “Has a smile on his face on 4th and 7. He is the calm in the middle of chaos.”

  1. I wish BLM would recognize the common denominator the ‘class acts’ of any pro sport share as in Grant Hill, Tim Duncan, David Robinson, Jordan and that new whippersnapper Patrick Mahomes II. 🙂

  2. I think I heard Grant Hill commenting on a basketball game and banging on about racism in America. If memory serves in the slightest it was shortly after another made-up white on black crime so ‘natch,’ once again it became flavor of the day. But yes, we need moderate muslims and moderate Blacks (btw ALM) to step out of the shadows.
