      1. Hyp, I think ‘white-collar’ crime and rioting/looting are both seen as ‘victimless’ in the current climate. (I’m leaving out rapes in broad daylight on subway platforms/punching out elders on the sidewalk, etc. of course.)

  1. I was thinking more of the 2020 rioters, whom our VP-to-be herself exhorted her followers to bail out—and this was followed of course by a widespread elimination of bail itself. Then by elimination even of prosecution assuming you can find the perps. They caused billions of dollars worth of damage to their fellow citizens. Then we’ve got the 1619 Project author chiming in: there has always been crime and to even talk about it now is racist. ( Um…why would THAT be, Ms Jones?)
But you’re right of course. It depends on who is doing the “white collar crime”. Hunter is so all-out grungy it’s hard to separate out actual violations of particular criminal statutes. But Papa Bygone? Hello, he benefitted from $31B of Chinese money while he was VP!!!! Oh and he owes half a million in taxes, anybody remember THAT?
And yet, everybody is all excited by the suggestion that, maybe, the Trump organization overstated the value of some of its properties in order to secure loans! GOT ‘im! At last!
Like the entire financial world doesn’t know it’s the lender, not the borrower, who is responsible for determining the value of collateral. If they don’t do due diligence, it’s on them.
So yuh: double standard, but when you get down below the elite level, a reg’lar old miscreant is better off looting a store than (gasp!) defrauding his insurance company.

  2. …howsomever, I’m puzzled by your title. Do you mean, is the criminal lifestyle a choice? I’d think, unless you’re at the level of having to steal food or starve, it IS a choice, innit? Elaborate, dear Saint?

  3. Hi, Hyp and ST! Rioters, etc. aren’t acting in freedom – freedom carries responsibility as a companion. What these folks are exercising is license – which the current VP encouraged – and tied to social determinism.

  4. If human beings have free will then lifestyle is a choice. If lifestyle is a choice then violent crimes are also committed by choice unless perhaps extreme mental retardation or certainly the Patty Hearst alibi is an option even perhaps for a handful of the Lord’s Army youngest thugs – oui?

    1. Yes. We have free will, but we cannot choose to be perfect. That option is not open to us. We can and should aim for perfection, but we can’t choose it. The Patty Hearst alibi applies in many cases. Often, those who engage in terrorism have been brainwashed since birth. I fully support killing them, but I don’t feel qualified to judge them.

The same Bible that tells us that we have free will also tells us that we should be merciful and very careful about judging others. We can never really know what goes on in someone else’s mind. The problem is, leftists are willing to endanger the innocent in the name of supposedly being merciful. The problem is, that leftists believe that self defense is a form of vengeance.

For all we know, most Islamic terrorists might be innocent victims of a culture that brainwashed them since birth. That is a tragedy, and I pray for them, but regardless of what does or doesn’t go in their minds, they must be either killed or locked up for the rest of their lives. If they are innocent victims of brainwashing, God will forgive them. God won’t be so forgiving of us if we refuse to defend ourselves. Leftists are not merciful. They are suicidal.

  5. In Catholicism, we pray for all souls to go to Heaven, especially those in most need of God’s mercy. If you find yourself dreaming of someone else burning in hell, you have a problem. We should pray for everyone to get into Heaven, but that is not at all the same thing as allowing murderers and child rapists to roam the streets in search of new victims. Leftists make a mockery of Christian mercy.
