…because, well, its been kinda heavy weather INside me lately, but yet I have kept up with my routines: a three mile walk every day. or since it’s now winter, cross-country skiing.
Last Saturday we had some rain on top of of about a foot of snow. it didnt melt it, the water sank in and froze. Sunday very cold again, and it was too icy to ski, but OTOH you could walk on top of the frozen crust.
But this week it warmed up a bit, to above freezing, so the hard icy crust became jeeeest a tad slushy on top. meaning you could ski without sinking in at all, and it is VERY slick: all glide, all the time !
i love the yellow-grey winter skies, like slightly tarnished silver. or maybe like light reflected in silver…
i love how the streams look ink-black against the snow.
i love the rust-coloured beech sapper leaves, tinkling and brittle as they tremble in the wind.
O dear world! please, love me back!
Welcome back, dear Hypatia! Thank you for the sounds and sights you share in this post: so much variety and beauty to savor. (You almost make me like Winter!)

I will try cross country skiing again as long as no heavy kit (backbacks, sleds, tents, sleeping bags, stoves, fuel, etc.) is involved.

I went out with a woman who insisted on wearing a backpack. I dk what was in it except bottles of water, but not surprisingly she kept falling over backwards. How stupid! We weren’t camping, just doing a few hours exercise, and even water seems superfluous, you could always eat some snow. No I wouldnt want to do it with any kind of burden.
P. S.: waking up to another inch or so of beautiful fluffy snow, no wind, so all the pines and bare branches are delicately outlined with it.

Wow, and for some reason I thought you were in Florida but not, obviously.

Moi?!?! In FLORIDA?!?!? Perish the thought, I ❤️❤️❤️the temperate zone, the real seasons! I am not even tempted, rather the reverse, by the prospect of taking a warm vacation while the beautiful snow piles up around here. It ain’t right, it ain’t NATURAL!
(FYI, dear @cupcakecache, I’m a revenant denizen of the Pocono Plateau, far northeast corner of Pa, the most beautiful place in the world, say I!)

I grew up in the Catskill Mountains and spend many a year in NYC and Seoul, Korea. I do prefer the warmness and see us retiring one day to another island.

I think the Caymans would be most excellent place to retire.

I also like cold weather. One can do many fun things without getting bogged down by the heat. We love walking, and Europe is all about walking if one wants to know the place well. So many European trips we did in December & January, and we could walk 10-15 kilometers every day.
