Our latest privation in Bygone-Harris’ America is : baby formula! people are panicking. (i wonder if its the same people who are so frantic to prevent babies from ever seeing the blesséd light of the sun.)
Ladies: Have you forgotten that you can produce your OWN ”baby formula”, right in the comfort of your own home? in fact if youre a new mom, youre swimmin’ in the stuff, unless youve made a deliberate and painful effort to unnaturally dry up your breast milk.
I have not heard one mention of breast feeding during this latest brouhaha.
Has it gone out of fashion (again)?
When i gave birth, La Leche was in the ascendant. They visited maternity wards, they coordinated women even sharing breast milk among other women’s babies. Personally, i dont see how anybody ever had time to share; one big hungry infant will be putting in an order every 15 minutes or so.
And its free! Nature’s bounty!
But my BMD sez “poor” (working class? economically disadvantaged?) women dont breastfeed. Maybe because they have to go back to work. But at the rate inflation is burgeoning, maybe formula will be so expensive (and scarce) that the better economic choice will be to make your own.
Maybe someone will invent a better breast pump.
Or maybe wet nursing as a profession will come back! As a business model it is unique: no overhead! No supply chain issues!
of course, though, Pa would muck it up with licensing fees, product testing, etc. You cannit do anything in our state without a license. They’d set up a ”State Board of Human Lactation”, and charge wonen for certification!
And that’d suck.
At least 6 months to get all mom’s immunization and such but please someone tell me what is the cut off age?
Inquiring minds would like to inquire.

I have heard of a few ladies who were dry due to a lack of personal nourishment.

There is no cut off age. And it remains beneficial to the kid.

…but i believe ypu should stop while infantile amnesia will still kick in.
Everybody who observes the perfect circle of suckling is jealous of it. The baby and the mom need no more, from anyone , during the act. Thets why women who dont have the sense to do it discreetly encounter so much hostility. People are seeing bliss and they know it, they dont want to have to witness that, it trivializes whatever theyre experiencing. Yeah well, to hell with’em!

This or something like this is what I was wondering about with my original question. Thanks.

My experience is most people except young children are chill with mom feeding baby in public unless mom seems to try to make it ostentatious.

I think so too. I did it, whwrever necessary, for nearly 3 years and never got a look askance.

Dear Hypatia, these are the pitfalls of modernity. People forget the basics. Did you hear of such shortages from India? Even though people are much poorer here. Alas, in big cities in India, too, things have started going Southwards.
