November 8. To me it’s special, when election day falls on the 8th; that is my mother’s birthday and my parents’ wedding anniversary.
It used to be a dies irae, a day of judgment, By the wee hours of the next morning, everything would be changed, all things new. You couldn’t help being excited.
“Send but a song oversea for us/Heart of their hearts that are free! /Heart of their singer, to be for us/More than our singing can be! /We, in the tempest at error/With no light but the twilight of terror-/Send us a song oversea! “
Swinburne, from To Walt Whitman in America.
I know it isn’t that way any more. In Pennsylvania, perhaps more than anywhere else, we can only look forward to a long, dreary round of lawsuits. Tomorrow will be …even worse than today, no matter who gets the most votes.
But I can’t help feeling a bit of the old frisson! 55 minutes now till the polls open!
And: God keep us free.
Thank you for this, Hypatia.
I don’t really know what to say. The results were…..disappointing, especially where I live 😦

I didn’t remember this, but I read that this is like the 1978 midterms: everybody hated Carter, he was such a downer, we had “stagflation”, fuel shortages…but in the midterms the GOP didn’t do that well. But then in 1980, Reagan rose like a sun in our skies, and (Altho it took a while) we entered the glorious decade of the 80s—and 3 terms of Republican presidencies. So….we hafta keep a good thought, I reckon.

All men went Republican, married men more so than single men, and married women also went Republican. Single women went dem by about 30 points, I think.
I don’t think women should be voting, but they are. So, what to do? Maybe conservatives should stop taking child rearing advice from leftists? I don’t have children, but my advice is based on the fact that I was a child, once, lol 🙂 I left home at 19, and paid very little attention to politics while I was gone. I moved back at 24, and being around my parents, started paying a lot more attention. The fact that I was living with my parents meant that they had a great deal of influence on my thinking. I voted republican even when I was single, but that was because of parental influence.
Long story short, kicking young women out of the house is just turning them into dem voters. In my very large extended family, young women are not kicked out and young men aren’t either: they are both strongly encouraged to work, and save money. Virtually all of them are homeowners by the time they are 25. Most of them are also married with children by that time too, and most of them if not virtually all of them are republicans.
Leftist psychologists are the ones who decided that adult kids should be kicked out. That alone should cause us to be distrustful of the idea. So many great parents who are very well meaning kick the kids out thinking that it will foster hard work and independence. It’s an idea that looks good on paper, but it has the effect of creating millions upon millions of young, single women who vote dem.
Men and women are different. If you give women the right to vote and then tell them that they are totally on their own, many of them will vote for governement to take care of them. I was blessed with a father who spoiled me and always took care of me, so I am not judging anyone, just saying. 🙂

From South Africa I felt quietly relieved to at least feel that the people had their say. My country is too mixed up for me to keep track of, but if America goes down, none of us will be free. So I echo the prayer, God keep us free.
