Just as red states usually have blue areas, blue states usually have red areas, and purple areas. Last time I checked, geographically, Massachusetts is at least half and maybe more than half red. Unfortunately, several major population centers are deep blue, and they always vote. Hence, Massachusetts as we know it.
Anyway, my home town of Chicopee is basically purple. Hardly the most conservative place in Massachusetts but definitely not the most liberal, either. In general, people in Chicopee are not really that conservative, but we are more than conservative enough to scare people in more liberal areas π To people in Northampton, Chicopee might as well be Texas. We are only 20 minutes down the road, but it’s a different world.
Someone on a local chatboard just called people from Chicopee “Chicobillies.” LOL π The particular person who used the term this particular time was very good natured, and was not trying to alienate anyone. I am sure that some who use this word are not so good natured, but either way, I don’t care. I love It. I love being a Chicobilly π
Do you are grow chick peas in this area or is there another reason for the name. We have some names here that I can’t pronounce, so not critical. Just wondering if there is a connection with peas. Keep the faith, smile and wave.

Hello, Sasha π I was always told that “Chicopee” is the name Native Americans had for the area. Rumor has it that it means “rushing waters,” which would make sense, because the Connecticut river goes right through Chicopee. During the 1800’s, Chicopee was called “Cabotville” because some guy whose last name was Cabot owned the factories there. I don’t know exactly when or why they decided to call the area Chicopee. I should look into this. It would be interesting to know π

This is the take of a local historian. Basically, the meaning of the word “Chicopee” is up for debate π https://www.masslive.com/history/2010/04/post_1.html

Thank you, Sasha π I almost didn’t post it, because I wasn’t sure it would be of any interest to people who aren’t from Chicopee π
