Wellsir! DiSantis just took himself riiiiight outta 2024 by signing that law prohibiting abortion after 6 weeks.
SIX weeks. I mean , I’m somebody who felt maybe the 12 week period in Roe could be shortened, now that anybody can find out she’s pregnant the day she misses her period by peeing on a cheap little strip of paper. But 6 weeks? A lot of women have very irregular periods.
No, this is Draconian.
Don’t get me wrong, this ain’t my issue, really. I won’t be conceiving, and there is only one other woman whose uterus I care about, and she’s an adult so I would have absolutely no control over her decision should the situation arise.
But, um, didn’t the midterms teach the GOP anything? There are a lot of one issue (or “no issue”, more accurately) voters out there, and, fueled by the Dobbs decision, they effectively stopped up the anticipated midterm “red wave” with a blue tampon.
In my opinion, what Trump said about the issue in 2016 was perfect: he said he was pro-life because he knew a kid whose parents hd considered aborting, and the kid turned out to be a wonderful person. There! Nobody can really argue with that.
What can/should Trump say about this Florida law? I’m kinda hoping: nothing. I’m skeert! Don’t blow it, Don, your rival has kneecapped himself!
I know what I’d say if I were Trump: that Roe, though legally and constitutionally indefensible, was in practical terms kinda..apt. The country lived with it for 50 years with not too much fuss. States had room to regulate after 12 weeks, and could flatly prohibit late term abortion, which in my opinion is essentially infanticide.
No, he shouldn’t say “Codify Roe!” I don’t think Congress has power to do that; read their enumerated powers and see if you dont agree.

But he oughta somehow let the voters see a chink of daylight between him and Ron, between him and Florida, on this issue.

Or it’s bye-bye 2024. And Good Night America.

  1. “There are a lot of one issue (or “no issue”, more accurately) voters out there, and, fueled by the Dobbs decision, they effectively stopped up the anticipated midterm “red wave” with a blue tampon.”

Did this really happen? No doubt, some women are very much in favor of abortion, but they always vote dem anyway. Right after Roe was overturned, some leftists were saying that dems would win the midterms in a landslide, because of Roe being overturned. That didn’t happen.

Although, given all the mail in ballots and various election frauds going on, it is very difficult, if not impossible, for anyone to know exactly what happened.

  2. And, dearest Hypatia 🙂 I must object to your use of the word “draconian.” The point of these restrictions on abortion is not to be excessively harsh and severe with women. The point is, life begins at conception. We relate more to older fetuses for aesthetic and emotional reasons, but scientifically, life begins at conception and our laws should reflect that.

Being pro-life sucks: it totally, totally sucks. There are so many other things that, given my druthers, I would have rather devoted my energy to. The main reason I stick my neck out on this is because it should not be legal to kill innocent humans, no matter how inconvenient they are. I don’t do this because I get some kick out of making life difficult for women. Actually, a woman I am very close to had an abortion and seeing the devastation that it wrought in her life was a major reason why I became involved as an adult.

It is often said that suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Unless the mother’s life is at stake, the same thing can be said of abortion. Abortion does not help women. The list of abortionists who became pro-life advocates goes on forever, and they would tell you the same thing: abortion is about money, full stop. They don’t care about women, they are just profiting off of vulnerable women, the same way “gender affirming care” “doctors” profit off of mentally unstable people. In both cases, they are offering a solution that solves nothing. Our laws should not be supportive of that.

    1. It wasn’t an error, but it was forced. The Florida legislature presented him with a bill that would outlaw abortion after 6 weeks, forcing him to make a choice. Veto the bill, and totally alienate pro-lifers, or sign it and alienate pro-choice Republicans and independents. Politically, it’s a huge risk either way. I think he did the right thing.

Most Southern states have enacted total bans on abortion: before this bill, Florida was becoming known as “The abortion destination of the South.” That will probably continue even now, because even with a six week ban, Florida’s laws are still more liberal than many other states in the vicinity. If DeSantis had vetoed this bill, he would not have stood a chance in the primary.

      1. My biorhythms are in a trough. Yes, thanks JAX, for the detailed explanation of the rock and hard place scenario.
        I was blissfully ignorant.
