Seeking advice. A progressive colleague approached me a couple of years ago to ask about various conservative ideas; and since then, weāve been having a running e-mail debate. I have tried to explain what and why I believe, but am beginning to think that this is hopeless. My colleague is intelligent, well educated, and well informed. I had hoped to bring him around to our point of view. Now it feels like mission impossible. Lately his responseshave turnedāa bitā nasty. Please read just one of our many (colorful) exchanges and help me to decide if I am near a breakthroughor is it time to throw in the towel? Frankly, Iāve about had it.

Who has been more coddled than African Americans in the last half century? Easy: white women. White women are also by far the greatest beneficiaries of affirmative action.

One thing about Black people, especially Black men: they really are a minority, and there really is a history of them being oppressed. Yes, it’s history, but it did happen at one point.
White women are a much larger group, with an even far more dubious claim on being oppressed right now. Yet, some of them-some of us, unfortunately, milk the victim complex for all that it is worth. It’s embarrassing.

Of course they were! All of my grandparents came from Ireland, and they were oppressed too, I was thinking specifically in terms of America: historically, compared to Black people, White women in America have had it pretty darn good-better than anywhere else, ever. Really, anyone of any color and any socioeconomic class who was blessed enough to be born in America has nothing to complain about. But white women especially have nothing to complain about.

The Highland culture is no more because there are no Highlanders left to perpetuate the ancient Scottish culture. A case for genocide can be made.
There are 10s of millions of African-Americans and probably even more Sub-Saharan Africans. Neither are threatened with genocide IMHO krap

I have been to the Scottish Highlands. Everyone should go, if they can. The English (and the Scottish nobles who sold out their own people) were a level of evil that Americans probably can’t wrap our heads around.
My paternal grandfather grew up in County Mayo, Ireland, while it was being occupied by the English. He tried to explain to my father how evil the English occupiers of that time were: he even said that he would not necessarily have objected to them being there, he just objected to them being such bastards. Grandpa hit the effing roof when my Dad enlisted to fight in WWII. The idea of his son fighting what he considered to be an English war was unbearable to him.
My Grandfather was killed by a drunk driver while my Dad was in boot camp. My Dad always said that if his father had lived long enough to understand everything that was going on, he would have changed his mind. The poor man was grappling with something that his American born and bred son could not begin to understand.
