I just read Dmitri Orlov’s book, Reinventing Collapse, (2011) What’s gonna happen here when the oil wells stop pumping and the refineries stop…refining? IMHO, this wont happen cuz we’re outta oil, but only if the Left succeeds in its insane policy of destroying the fossil fuel extraction and production industries. But, the book made me take stock: what IF…?
I’ve always read that the best commodities to have, to use for barter if a country’s currency fails, are alcohol, tobacco and firearms. But, you gotta have a renewable supply, because in the event of total collapse of social order, the prisons will be opened, the troops will be coming home, there will be lotsa men about who don’t abhor violence, so, if you use those things in barter, then everybody knows you have some, and they may be stolen. So simply hoarding wouldn’t avail you much.
Can I hope to accumulate, and replenish, my supply?
Alcohol: I can line my cellar and attic and for that matter my bedroom with bottles of whisky. But they could be pillaged. And the supply probably won’t last as long as I do, in any event. 🫠 So it occurred to me that my BMD’s new beekeeping hobby will save the day! We can ferment the honey to make mead! Yeah we’d need a still, but that isn’t exactly a high-tech piece of equipment.✔️
Tobacco: we’re in Northern Appalachia here, and I assumed you needed to be in the South to grow tobacco, but I was wrong! A lot of the sot-weed is grown here, AND we’re one of only 4 states where it’s legal to grow, and smoke, your own! (I mean, legality won’t matter post-collapse, but this means we can start a crop next spring! ) I’m sure post-collapse everybody will grow pot, why not? but people might still want reg’lar old non-hallucinogenic cancer sticks. I can’t imagine that they’d wanna live very long anyway. ✔️
Firearms: we are awash in guns here, 3 generations of ‘em! But what about ammo? I know my BMD can both re-load and make bullets, but—outta what? Copper is already expensive, and once we’ve melted down all the sinkers from our fishing lines…..? Then it hit me: we’ve got all these sets of silverware from various ancestors. Silver bullets! Yes I reckon we’d need a forge to melt ‘em down, but if blacksmiths had those under the spreading chestnut tree in the eighteenth century, I’m sure we can rig one up here. ✔️
I am PREPPED! Are you?
The first concern for most serious peppers of my acquaintance is how to get and transport drinking water.
Secondly is to coordinate with your local tribe for security.
I also recommend some sort of ultralight aircraft.

You’re way ahead of me, Simon, as usual! I’m just funnin’ really. If social order/ the supply chain does collapse, people like me will be dead in a few weeks….but, a girl can dream!

Fly me and a few of my buddies in just before the end times. If we can get you through the first few weeks you’ll have a fighting chance.

You think southern Chile will not feel the cataclysm?

And yes, what you say about personal protection, Orlov says too. The soldiers will be repatriating. And they’ll be for hire. Hire them, or risk somebody else hiring them, to attack you.
So yes indeedy, I will take you up on your kind offer!

I will have coffee to barter. It will be in short supply in the US outside of Hawaiian following impact by Atrophis.
P.S. Antibiotics and rudimentary dentistry are worth thinking about.

Yes, probably a good idea to stock up on painkillers, even as rudimentary as aspirin. And coffee, GOD yes! People will probably be willing to kill for that a few weeks in. I know I’d be desperate for it.
