A Blesséd Michaelmas!

that’s today, Sept 29. Michael is an archangel and a very militant one! In apocryphal writings he’s supposed to have defeated Satan and the fallen angels.
i have two pleasant associations with him. One is visiting Mont St. Michel in France, the monastery built on a rock sticking up out of the shore. You can see it for miles. When the tide is in , it’s an island. We stayed at a beautiful hotel, Manoir de La Roche-Torin, in Courtils-Bas; you can see the Mont while enjoying confit de canard in the dining room.

And it’s appropriate because he is the archangel associated with the element water.

The second is Allan Moore’s huge, wonderful novel, Jerusalem, in which the archangel is affectionately known as “Mighty Mike”. I really can’t tell you everything that’s in this book. Part of it is, like, the greatest children’s book you can remember, part is biographies of various writers and poets, part is about What Comes Next. Michael the archangel, at one point says:

“I am in all my images! I watch you from every Christmas card!”

…And I thought of all those DaForli and Giordano angels we circulate every year.

And all the stone images, like the one atop Mont St. Michel.

Spare a thought for this archangel on his feast day!
