I’ve been spoiled by the St Andrews Society of New York, which hosts a very glamorous affair at the rococo University Club. But of course that dinner costs like 20 times what this one did. Welp—that’s the difference between Manhattan and Camp Hill Pa!
First: the people were so nice! I love my state! (When you’re done reading this, listen to Van Wagner’s song “North of 80” on YouTube, to get a feel for my little shelf of Appalachia.)
There was only one major disappointment: the “haggis” . I put that in quotes because what we were served wasn’t haggis, I dk what it was, it tasted like meatloaf and not GOOD meatloaf. Real haggis is delicious. When we were in Edinburgh we had it every day, three times a day. You can order haggis from Scottish Gourmet Co. I wanted to send one to the chairman of this event, but my BMD says the gesture would probably be misinterpreted, and I reckon he’s right.
So: it was fun, and I’m sure we’ll go next year too—but I think I’ll also host my own Burns Supper again. The food and the booze are better!
So glad you liked it! And—every word is true! Sure, it’s amateurish, but that only makes it more real. As a native Pocono Plateaunian, it makes me cry too.
Last year I gave a Burns Night party—it was great! I memorized a couple verses of To a Haggis.
This year we’re going to a Burns dinner on Saturday.

And thanks for asking, dear Judy!

This song made me cry! The pictures remind me of Western Mass, which is also in the Appalachians. Thank you so much, Hypatia 🙂
