Welp—in a world where the Pope can say that ALL religions lead to God without angry Christians rioting with torches and putting the Vatican under siege, nothing should surprise us.
And yet..there’s the “two-state solution “ for Israel.
It’s the ultimate safe response for any politician asked about the issue. It’s like “End our dependence on foreign oil!” used to be, before Trump actually did that; or like “End world hunger! “ used to be, before we accomplished that too, in favor of world obesity. A slogan everybody has to applaud, because nobody thinks it can ever, really happen, but hey, dream on.
But in this case, we have HAD many two-state solutions in the Holy Land, starting with the Balfour Declaration, and most recently, in 2006. Not 2 decades ago! Within “living memory”, if that phrase hadn’t become an oxymoron.
Israel unconditionally withdrew from Gaza, forcibly removing its own citizens, many of whom had given up everything for the chance to live in Eretz Israel as their creed teaches. I reckon it’s asking a lot, but—does anybody remember those heartbreaking scenes? The weeping Jewish families as they watched the Israeli government bull doze their homes? But the Israelis in the end went peaceably. Completely OUT by September 2006, leaving all infrastructure intact. The Gazans HAD it: their OWN state!
In June 2007 they elected Hamas.
Sooo…say whatever you want, but PLEASE:
STOP pretending a “two-state solution” hasn’t already been tried—and failed.
I seem to recall reading that the average IQ of Americans has been on the decline for a while now.

Hyp, at least from this Catholic’s perspective, the reason we’re not storming the Vatican with torches/laying siegeworks, is that we know this pope has no theological heft, so we don’t pay his kumbaya moments any attention. Ditto for his pronouncements on politics; we’re not canonically obliged to do so. His opinions in such circumstances carry no more weight than anyone else’s.

Nanda, I get that about politics, but Jesus said “no man cometh unto the Father but by Me”, so when the pope says you can get there through any other god or avatar, THAT seems pretty heretical. Am I wrong?

Hyp, He’s too feckless and focused on some 60s-70s dream of human concord (“I’d like to give the world a Coke…”.) to be considered a heretic. The last conclave wanted to give the Americas a chance…. Ah, well: “The gates of the netherworld shall not prevail….”.
