Those are my neighbors up here on the Plateau who expect Spring in April.
This morning we’re waking up to a beautiful fluffy snowfall. It was raining when we took our walk about 11 PM, but changed over during the night, So now I’m looking out upon a “landscape drawn in pearly monotones”, as the poet Elinor Wylie put it. (She was a NEPa girl.)
it looks to me like, maybe, 4 inches? A heavy wet snow, the pine tree outside my window is already beginning to drip. Not enough I’m afraid for XC skiing.
But concerning my title: the “fools” are people who seem to be in denial about the fact that this is not at all an unusual occurrence here in April. It happens all the time. Sometimes we gat a real blizzard in April, a foot or more of snow, which is especially messy if the ground has already thawed a bit, so the ploughs are scraping up mud.
So why do people who grew up here, or have lived here a long time, always act so surprised and aggrieved?
