Eggs

That’s what got me thinking this morning as I prepared my fave breakfast (soft-boiled, with pieces of toast crumbled in..😋)

As the deep gold yolk spurted up at me, suddenly…….I’m at a party in a neighborhood in suburban Philadelphia. In a….well, I reckon you’d call it a “housing development”, but an old one. A “covenant community”, no HOA or anything. I’m there at the invitation of my close friend, a municipal worker, (y’know, snow ploughing, garbage collection, leaf removal). His neighbors, ll of whom are there, mingling contentedly, are black and white, white collar and blue collar, old nd young, everybody flatteringly dappled gold by the afternoon sun filtered by huge old trees. It’s…1986, maybe? Somewhere around that time.
And to the point at last: eggs! Games involving racing with the egg on a spoon. Games of “catch” where the players had to keep moving a few steps farther away from each other with each throw, until…SPLAT!
Just reg’lar old and young Americans, throwing food around just for the hell of it! Food they hd paid for with good money, solely for that purpose!
Here’s what I’m getting at with my title: that world is submerged by the years since, gone, . We don’t hve tht kinda integrated neighborhood ny more, we don’t have the social confidence to mix with anybody who drops by, we certainly don’t have the gay abandon to throw eggs—EGG$! For which we paid good money just to use them , waste them, in making ourselves laugh!

o my America! Where’d ya GO?
