She says in the song that he was always 2 steps ahead of her. From my experience that means she was unwilling to embrace her inner child and submit herself to what she knew to be ‘cosmic’ in him; but, she couldn’t understand him so she let him walk away to find a better place instead of her ‘settling’ for him.
Too late he has moved on a grown even bigger while she has only gained weight in most cases.
