Let the Lower Lights Be Burning!

It’s a line from a great old hymn which probably nobody else will recognize, but that’s okay. It comes to mind this Autumn because, although the Poconos have always been known for our brilliant autumn colours, this year was disappointing. The leaves in the canopy, the high, mature trees, just..turned brown and fell off. I have no idea why. A very very wet spring, followed by a very dry hot summer? Well it isn’t like that hasn’t happened before.

Anyway what I want to tell you is that the high trees’ colour was a bust this year.—but not to despair! Once you get INTO the woods, underneath the now bare canopy, you see the brilliant yellow of the young sapper trees, neon orange of barberry bushes, brilliant scarlet of blueberry bushes ( they didn’t bear any fruit this year, but at least they’re redeeming themselves now).

WHY was this such a weird year? No apple blossoms, no blueberry blossoms ( which of course meant no apples and blueberrries) , turtles laying their eggs in September?

Who knows? Not me. But I’m here to tell you that the lower lights of Autumn are burning here on our Plateau, and I give thanks.
