Colin Campbell is developing the first black pepper plantation in the West Indies. His days are spent clearing jungle, planting and fighting vipers. His nights are spent playing jazz piano at a local bar and enjoying the company of the local ladies. He meets Alan Greene at a jazz festival in Limon. Alan, a Canadian botanist, is marooned in Costa Rica, abandoned when his employer curtailed his mission. (He refused to leave his outpost so he could complete research on the native herbal traditions.) Alan agrees to help Colin, known locally as El Colonel, with his pepper propagation problems in exchange for a small salary, room, board, and help getting to the Canadian Embassy to clear up his visa issues, gain access to funds, and exit Costa Rica.

Pretty Insulting

I feel kinda dumb—I didn’t realize it was indeed an insult for us ā€˜ettes to be called ā€œpretty girlsā€. Contrary to what I’da thought, evidently it means a female with low self esteem. Low. So I reckon it was meant to say, we’re just pathetic if we want to blog on a site where we get some attention, sometimes positive attention. (Did the rest of you know what she meant?)

Like, that’s the best we can do, we’ve got nothing else going for us. (I hope the editors of our state bar association magazine and the lawyers who write me about my articles never find that out about me 😱.)

Should I even post this? I’m the one always telling us all here to just…make our own fun, who gives a phuque about les autRes. (And as I’ve said, I’m promiscuous: I love ā€˜em both, even the one that jilted…
