Imagine? Really?

Ok, I have never really liked the song “Imagine”. The idea of a Universe in which there is no heaven, above us only sky, has never appealed to me. Since the ChiComs released CoVid 19 upon the world, I have heard countless numbers of celebrities singing it: it seems to have become a kind of theme song for the virus. Am I the only one who thinks it’s a little weird that when faced with a deadly epidemic, there are some who hope even more fervently for a universe in which there is no afterlife?

Maybe I am not understanding the song? I have nothing against John Lennon, and I like most of his music, but he was, after all, British, and “Imagine” strikes me as a very British song. After centuries of warfare and strife over religion, many if not most people in Great Britain have just rejected religion altogether, and given their experience with it, it’s kind of understandable. It doesn’t surprise me at all that an English guy would write that song: it does surprise me that many Americans would make it their theme song when they are faced with illness and death. Can anyone explain this?

  1. JaC, a little historical context may help this out; the lyrics, describing a godless, amorphous, collectivity are Yoko’s. John did the song at a benefit concert in NYC in 1972 “One to One”, to support Down Syndrome charities in his adopted home city. John sang: “Imagine no possessions/I wonder if *we* can…”. I always rewrote her horrible lyrics in my head. Also, socialism/communism/utopianism had become intriguing and chic then – 25 years after WWII, it pops up as reasonable every so often. The song has been coopted by all kinds of folks, for their own reasons….Sad.

      1. In the larger scheme of things, yes. In my lifetime? No, there has never been a time like this, nor in the lifetimes of those singing “Imagine” either. Mind you, I am not at all saying that this is the worst thing I have ever seen, but when the whole world shuts down?

I just really hate that song 🙂 I am being a curmudgeon 🙂

      2. S’okay to dislike songs. I don’t like it’s overuse as an alternate anthem, either, but save the curmudgeon mode for other stuff….There’s light at the end of this…Turn off the news, for just one day, please? 🙂

  2. This is far, far better music for this moment in time. I have not heard this on National TV once, they just keep playing that atheist commie pinko song. I wonder why?

No, you’re not. I hate that song mostly because it’s a bunch of naive nonsense and speaking as a former Beatles Fan Club President, I never liked my Liverpudlians on their own. (:

      1. I enjoyed it too and miss them so much!

P.S. I used to dress up as Jane Asher for Halloween with red wig, mini-skirts and white go-gos. Other little girls wanted to be film stars; I wanted to be her. 🙂
