I think it means that although he was flamboyant he was not going to be the icon, point man, leader, and spokesman of the entire homosexual community. I think it means he had enough of his own demons and did not want to take on additional burdens by “coming out.”
He was cast perfectly in Bewitched. I wonder though if that role and all those years on Hollywood Squares did not pigeon hole his career. It seems Hollywood left most of his comedic genius on the table and not where it belonged, on the big screen.
Cats – or anything by Andrew Lloyd-Weber – definitely doesn’t count, hermano, so your record re: not attending musicals is intact. :-)(What would T.S. Eliot think of it, I wonder?)
Where on Earth do you find these quotes?

That man always made me laugh; now, thinking of him makes me sad.

Amen to that, ST. Did he have a role in “Bye, Bye Birdie”? I remember him singing “Kids” in the film, I think.

No problem; my folks thought the song was pure genius. 😀 The chorus got hummed a lot in our house.

I did see Cats but a girl invited me so that does not count. I think not?
