During the early 90’s, I was a waitress in a bar in Anchorage. At that time, there were after hours clubs all around the city, that people would go to after the bars closed down. I was dating a guy who was a bartender in one of those clubs: he told me that he had brought a girl he was dating to the club. She stood in the entrance, awestruck, and proclaimed in a very loud voice, “Wow, this place is so underworld!”
The owner of that club instructed him to never bring her back. π
How many babes did your bartender bf date at the same time, usually?

Yep.
Did he also seem to get into a lot of fights?

Not that I could tell. If he did, he never talked about it, but who knows?

Oh, he was a wimp?

No, he was not a wimp. I never dated wimps. π
Actually, I really don’t know. I very much doubt that he was a wimp, but I just don’t know for sure π Anchorage at that time was a weird and wonderful place: whoever was in charge of the underworld there kept his guys on a very short leash, and he made sure that they behaved themselves. In two years of working in that bar, I never witnessed a fight: we were aware of fights that occurred outside the bar, but no one ever fought inside the bar, and it didn’t seem like people even fought outside the bar all that often.
There were unspoken rules that were very old fashioned: one unspoken rule was that men shouldn’t fight in front of women. Another unspoken rule was the women should never get drunk. Even though it was a bar, we were all very well behaved. Like I said, it was weird and wonderful π

Part of bartending was breaking up fights when I was bartending in Cape Girardeau, MO.

You are so cool π
Most of the bartenders in the place I worked at were coke dealers: most of the guys who worked in that club and a lot of the guys who went into that club were just using it as a cover for more nefarious activities. The girls learned very early on to not ask any questions. The ones who did ask questions were quickly dispensed with.

I hope by dispensed with you mean fired/ let go.

Well, whoever was in charge made sure that those girls were persona non grata. The girl who exclaimed that the after hours club was so underworld couldn’t be fired, she was just never invited back.

Another funny story, though: one of my friends who worked in that bar as a waiter was also a sculptor. He was one of the few who was not involved in any criminal activity. Anyway, one night, as the bar was closing down, he was chatting up some girl who wanted him to do a sculpture of her. While this was happening, some guy started trouble with him, so he took the guy outside and beat him up. When my friend came back in after wining the fight, the owner of the bar was bandaging his arms, and the girl whom he had been talking to just looked at him, awestruck, and she said “Wow, he’s an artist and he can fight too!”
It was so funny. That girl was kind of dingy, but she was totally right. π
