  1. I would like to think our government would allow them to sell their organic coffee in the land of the big PX.

Fair trade, single estate/source, organic Thai coffee has a ring to it, oui?

  2. But again, I refuse to believe the U.S. is responsible for these circumstances or even capable of doing much beyond placing a band-aid on the wound. There has to be a private cultural responsibility to promote capitalism as in Singapore. How on Earth do we change mind-sets and overcome the ignorance and corruption of the govt in third world nations?

India is further along the path because of English colonialism. Author Dinesh D’Souza writes quite poignantly that his career in America would have been considered impossible if he had remained in India but nonetheless, a seed was planted. (As an aside, I’d be interested in a response from our member Sando.)

I just don’t know after decades of enormous foreign aid if “outsiders” can achieve anything if certain ethics- work, rejection of corruptive govt, etc. are not understood or embraced.

I can say this because these values are deteriorating in my own society and I am horrified by the consequences.

If ‘State’s’ foreign aid had focused solely upon uprooting 3rd world governmental corruption, gains could have been made back in the day. Unfortunately, we have lost the moral authority to talk to other countries about the rule of law.
Our State Dept is beyond redemption and has been so since at least the mid-1950s. Please read “The Ugly American.”

How do you accomplish this except from within? I don’t blame “Ugly Americans” in the least for other problems in other countries; I’ll stick strictly to how we’ve managed to disrespect the magnificent philosophers who wrote the Declaration and the Constitution and support the far left who have convinced us to take the path to self-destruction.

In other words, ST, I care only about my own country right now.

  5. Your country requires your undivided attention if it is to be maintained at all.

“Ugly Americans” in the context of the book and ergo mine as well are the type of Americans that inhabit our State Department. We need US Desk Officers at all levels within our State Department and at least one posted in every Embassy. I kid you not!
