Hi Robin :)

I took my mother to see a new doctor today. Her old doctor is on medical leave, and then will be retiring, but at any rate, her old doctor left suddenly, and her GP recommended this new doctor. All we knew about this new doctor was that he had a very Islamic sounding name, so I went to the appointment fully expecting him to have a middle Eastern accent. I about fell off my chair when I heard him speak: his accent was so familiar. At first, I though maybe I was mistaken, so I listened to him for a minute or two, and then I told him that he had what sounded like a UK accent. He nodded and said “You are right.” Then he smiled at me, and said, “What part of the UK do you think my accent is from?” Without hesitation, I said, “Scotland.” He nodded again, and told me again that I was right. And it was so lovely to be able to listen to a beautiful Scottish accent for a few minutes.

In the entire time Robin lived in America-about 20 years-he never as far as I knew met anyone else from Scotland. I remember when Robin took me to Scotland the first time, being struck by the thick Scottish accents of the Indian guys at the Indian restaurant. I don’t know why this surprises me: there are people from all kinds of ethnic backgrounds in America, and we all end up with the same regional accents. Of course, it will be the same in other places. I still think it is weird and wonderful, though.

Anyway, every once in a while I get the feeling that Robin is waving at me from afar. I definitely had that feeling today, and this post is just my way of waving back. ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. As you know a lot of Scots settled in the American South, and had extensive contact with the natives. Thereโ€™s a great scene in Outlander where a. Indian starts speaking English, sounding like heโ€™s from Glasgow!

    1. Yes ๐Ÿ™‚ Robin used to tease me about this all the time. He was always reminding me of how adventurous the Scots were when they came to America-how they immediately ventured West and in all directions to explore-and how the Irish basically just got off the boat, found the first bar in Boston or New York, and just stayed. Lol ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Ok; all of y’all need to read historian Arthur Herman’s book: How the Scots Invented the Modern World. I actually met this impressive author at Heritage and I recommend all of his books. He was a captivating speaker.

At the risk of sounding smug, I loved this book. My middle name is McKai and I am damned proud to be a WASP with Scots/British ancestors.

    1. You should be proud! According to Ben Stein, there are more geniuses among Scottish people than any other ethnic group. Everybody thinks that Jewish people are the smartest, but according to Ben Stein, who is Jewish, Scottish people are actually the smartest people on earth. Considering that Scots really did invent the modern world, I find Ben Stein’s claim very easy to believe ๐Ÿ™‚
