As I have done during periods of personal adversity, I fantasize about being able to see a future where everything has turned out all right! In three months, will these instant privations be behind us? Will we laugh about them?
Or will they have become the norm, and we barely remember the way things were only last December, when we gathered, ate, drank, embraced without a care?
I’m having a St Patrick’s Day party Saturday. At least I think I am. Will my guests, one by one, call and say they’d just rather not be in even a small group of people just now? And I will say of course I understand, my hearth-fire and my heart-fire growing colder with each retraction….
Will this, if it transpires, be my last party ?

You are so right, these thousands of jubilant young Afghani men who jammed those cargo planes arent “Afghans who helped us”—they’re just the guys who bullied their way in to the front of the crowd. What the fuck do we think they’re gonna DO when they get here? They can’t have been doing anything worthwhile, nothing they were committed to, in Afghanistan or they wouldnta been so excited about just hopping a free flight out on a moment’s notice. They are rootless and violent and foolhardy. Like we needed this?

When I wrote this post In March 2020, I’d never have believed the privations would go on as long as they did. And I have an awful feeling they’ll be back this winter. I’m glad I didn’t know that back then. That was, indeed, my last party for months. Thanks for re-posting.☘️☘️
