They’ve become the darkside; (not the troops, but leaders, and their “report to’s”). Col. Milburn’s written some about the need for training and practice in “leading up”: Troops holding leaders to accountability, and questioning authority appropriately and routinely. (I’ll see if I can find at least one of the articles, and include a link here in the comment box.)
I’ll bet your superior didn’t mean to compliment you on your “troop mentality”. That’s a sin and a shame; you had the best of both worlds of experience at your disposal. Besides, Once a grunt, always a grunt, yes?
Not in actuality, no, of course not, but the heart, spirit, mindset: āImprovise, Adapt, and Overcome.ā stays with you as you move up, doesnāt it? Even when you retire or are honorably discharged. Thatās what I meant in gratitude, admiration, and even affection toward those I know.
I had to fight State tooth and claw to get any of my programs accepted before I could present them to our partner nations. Our Dept of State has long been counter productive, dare I say even undermining to DoD’s national security efforts abroad.

I was accused of having ‘troop mentality’ by one of my Commanding Officers. He did not mean it as a compliment.
